Well, I'm going to give up on Mastodon as soon as I have the time to look for better software... because frankly, it's not as unusable as tw.... but that doesn't mean much.
Of course I haven't said "give up on the fediverse".
random scrolling whenever you try to do anything (like if a link preview is not immediately available, it'll move things from under your mouse when you least expect it) - the version they run on mastodon.social is even worse, so I dread to think this instance may be "upgraded" to that at some point

Several things are correct, lists, only see once... but some is client-dependent I think. You say "mouse" so you are looking on the web? What browser, OS, etc. And do you want more than 500 characters or less? That is instance dependent.
@Uilebheist, what other fediverse softwares have you tried, and have any of them come close to providing you the experience you'd like? I've tried 10 different flavours deciding I prefer Friendica. There are still features that other have which I wish I had here, but this is what gives me the best experience. Whenever something new shows up, I enjoy reading about what it has to offer and taking it for a spin, who knows, maybe it'll be "the one".

Their post on which I was commenting was pulled into my feed because @Randy Resnick, with whom I am friends, had previously commented on it. However, because the post to which I replied, was itself a reply to a post of yours, you were automatically tagged as a result, not be me as you can see from the attached screenshot of that post on my end. Uilebheist's claim of problems with their Mastodon experience is why I offered the advise of what resolved my issues with it and other fediverse interfaces. This is the reason I specifically addressed my comment to them, not you, nor anyone else. I don't see why testing is rude on an instance, unless you're testing a bot 😂. I would recommend trying a mainstream browser, if nothing else, just to see how that works. I don't have random scrolls, etc, on any client. I don't have a machine to test palemoon, alas. Anyway, sorry you're having issues.
