From the inbox. Blind people should care about text formatting, like bold and italics. Screen readers should show it in speech, through voice changes, and Braille, after all there *are* symbols for this. Why would people use stars for italics if it weren't important to them?

From the inbox. Unpopular opinion. Use of things like *smiles* and *hugs* are outdated and look awkward AF. Emoji exist for a reason 👋

From the inbox. Everyone should learn to write and format in Markdown, and every OS and writing app should support it.

From the inbox. If you're doing things on the web, you should learn to read and write semantic HTML. It's the foundation of the web and not writing semantic HTML is where 80% of the web's accessibility problems come from.

From the inbox. Ok. Lots of hard things coming up this weekend. I want to balance things out a bit. Be the change you want to see, right?
Genuine question to everyone. What, as a blind person, makes you feel like your most confident and comfortable self?

My entire set of furniture is black... except for my desk, which has a brown top, my coffee table in the living room, which is blond, and the TV stand, which is gray. The TV itself has black on it, so... I have to remember to dust it weekly. Not that I always do, though...

I love black furniture... but dang, can it be a pain in the ass to take care of; dust freaking everywhere, though I wouldn't really have it any other way. It sort of forces me to find a routine, whereas lighter colored furniture is easier to miss the dust, making me lazier.

Why should you care about privacy if you have nothing to hide?

Because privacy is about power, not creepiness or secrets, says @neilmrichards in this week's newsletter:

#NationalKittenDay 1000s of kittens end up in shelters each year, never adopted. An article on humanpro.org reports that over 3.2 million cats end up in shelters & 27% are euthanized yearly. 💔

The impact of this is severe, and not just for the cats!

I would pay a small amount per-month for a service that just lets me forward spam e-mail to it, looks up the IP addresses for the malicious link, e-mail header, and domain if applicable, and e-mails the relevant abuse departments. I do this sometimes, but it's a lot of work.

To all those couples holding up signs that beg you not to abort and we will adopt 'your baby' why don't you ever consider adopting one of the 400K+ children in the foster care system? Plenty of children need a good home why do you need a baby?

IIRC, ACB President Dan Spoone did extend an olive branch to the NFB at the 2021 virtual convention general session opener. It would be nice to see a collab on the national level; states like MA do have collabs between the two orgs re: advocacy issues and showing up at events.

It’s OK that we’re a cult because other organizations do it too. #NFB22
