Around 4000 years ago, a dog left its pawprints in this Sumerian brick :

Sumerian Clay Brick with a Dog's paw prints (2112-2000 BC), from ziggurat at Ur; Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq).

According to scholars, around 2100 BC, a dog walked across this brick as it lay drying in teh sun when it was being made. Brick is stamped with an cuneiform inscription which tells that "Ur-Nammu, king of Ur, has built his temple for Nanna, his Lord. Also built city wall of Ur for him."

Animals are the same across time. They'll go where they want when they want. The rest of the world should adapt to them.

Lord Howe Island

Five years after a massive effort to remove invasive mice and rats from Lord Howe Island, the unique ecosystem is experiencing what is being called "an ecological renaissance" as the endangered flora and fauna recovers.

Lord Howe Island woodhens were reduced to only 30 individuals in the 70s due to egg predation from the invasive rodents, but in just the last five years the population has jumped from 200 to over 2,000.

I watched a Tom Scott video form a while back where they've been doing similar in NZ to great effect. It just shows that throwing our hands up and saying "we can't do anything" should never be accepted 😁

I was at the British Museum not three days ago looking at this very work of art. It is absolutely stunning. It's also huge-- there's panel after panel after panel. It's like an action movie carved in stone.

The Buffalo Dance or Bison Dance, an annual dance festival of many North American Plains Natives, including Mandan, Sioux, Cheyenne, Pawnee, and Omaha, among others. The festival traditionally coincided with the return of the buffalo herds and included a feast and a dance with a number of men wearing buffalo and other animal skins.

So, here's the thing: Each adaptation of Pride and Prejudice I've seen has strengths and weaknesses. What I look for in an Austen adaptation is whether I am learning from her work. Does the adaptation have her voice? Is it entertaining? What do you think?

This is the only surviving monastic fishery building in England ✨🐟

Meare Fish House was the residence of the official who was in charge of Glastonbury Abbey's fishery. It also provided facilities for fish-salting and drying.🎣

Scientists Revive 1,000-Year-Old Seed, Potentially Resurrecting Mysterious Biblical #Tree.

An ancient Judean seed has grown into a unique tree that may hold healing properties mentioned in the #Bible.
Researchers have successfully germinated a seed that lay dormant for over a millennium in the dry caves of the Judean Desert. Now, after 14 years of careful cultivation, that seed has grown into a unique tree that might just answer a Biblical riddle.

If you've never tried using a third party app on Mastodon, you're missing out! Mastodon is designed specifically for third party apps, they tend to have the widest set of features.

You can find lots of third party apps listed on the official site:

1. Go to joinmastodon.org/apps
2. Scroll past the official apps
3. Click your device type (Android, iOS etc)

If choice is overwhelming you, try these first:

:android: Tusky, Fedilab, Moshidon

:apple_old_logo: Ice Cubes, Ivory, Mona

I'm just an old fashioned Web sort of guy that thinks why do we need all these apps when we have the Web. I'm also one of the misguided folk that only uses a phone for phone calls and does all my computing on a computer, a desktop PC at that, so I'm definitely not with it.

I’ve read quite a few of these (β€œEligible,” β€œBeing Mary Bennet,” β€œPride and Prejudice and Zombies,” and β€œShades of Milk and Honey”), but others are definitely on my TBR list!
