People have asked why the elites don't seem to care about ecological disaster. My response has been that they obviously think they will be immune and safe in their bunkers.

This article goes into great detail and shows that is just scratching the surface.

Finally got my own physical box of the @oblique_strategies set. It's from 1975, and it feels like that, too. In the best possible way.

As serendipity wants it, I came across a study today that compared LLMs with Oblique Strategies set as creativity support tools (CSTs)

"The use of an LLM as a CST [makes] the LLM’s users feel more creative, and even broaden the range of ideas suggested by each individual user, but also homogenize the ideas suggested by different users."

dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3635636…

In other words, while LLMs might help individual users to become more creative, it does so for everyone in the same way. Thus, collectively, creativity is diminished.

This finding at the group level has been repeated a few times now in different studies.

This is not the case with the Oblique Strategies. Perhaps because applying these strategies is hard and requires the examination of one's own position and process.

Thanks to @remixtures for the pointer to the New Yorker article which contained the pointer to the cited study.

Sorry for the late reply but the driver stuff was me trying out proprietary vs community Nvidia drivers and then just weird things that would happen on restarts after switching/updating drivers. I have an intermittent issue where the primary monitor (I have two) alternates being entirely light grey, red, blue, and green upon startup I haven't researched it yet because I just restart the computer and it is fine. And it has happened maybe 3 times over the last month (amongst dozens of restarts). There are a few things like that that only happened once so I wrote off the occurrence.

I have had the most luck with the proprietary Nvidia driver so far.
