Putting this out there. How difficult would it be to create a child friendly "pod" of the Fediverse? That way kids could have a corporate free, somewhat federated, social media option

I'm not sure how it would be done, but an allow list for accounts too. For instance there are a lot of artists creating child friendly art on instances that allow CWd sexual nudity. How to allow child friendly accounts and "block" an instance? Or that might be too much of a reach for now

I don't know just guess that AP is mostly about public messages so harrassment would be rather visible.
Also I believe the interface offers reporting abuse very easily, which could come also handy.

Very much sharing some of your wonder, &/or shock in terms of Twitter. Watching migrations.
Meta has stopped laying global drift nets and the Zuck chewed up and disrupted many lives, as so many seem to do. But stay away from Mark's strawberries & Elon's sandbox. Everyone will be wearing their helmets & hats any day now.
So I think I know your feeling, a bit like Lessing's in the case of Twitter & Meta. Empires, institutions... Or more to the metaphor, the Queen is Dead.
I'm in the process of weaning myself off Facebook. The birdsite is already dead to me. Told my daughter yesterday I was leaving FB and she said, and I quote:
"... thank God. Social media's just toxic."
She doesn't know about Mastodon.
"Don't it always seem to go, that ya don't know what you've got 'til it's gone" - Joni Mitchell.
I swore off FB after watching perfectly reasonable friends start smearing Trump funk over the entirety of their being. Haven't looked back...it ain't so bad Joni, it ain't so bad...
The difference is that Twitter's demise is possible in the near term, especially when you consider it's never been consistently profitable.
Meta is a different beast. Despite recent losses, it remains a powerful business, with a significant empire. It won't fall without a fight.

I did a little comparison: reach and reaction on Twitter and Mastodon.
I picked a subject typical of my feed and reworded it to be more native to Mastodon. Same link, issue, people, tone.
With 309 K followers on Twitter it got 81 shares and 179 likes
With 8.5 K followers on Mastodon: 123 shares and 195 likes.
Here are the two posts:

Bingo! for more substantive discourse. I found this to be the case immediately.
Dare I even say that I’ve found more *sincere discourse as well?
In any event, “more thoughtful” has been my experience.
The one thing I have noticed is not as many posters at Mastadon leap to tell you that you are wrong or misrepresenting something.
Although I did have one "actually" reply to this.
Just got tone-policed and told I should go back to Twitter by someone who joined Mastodon… *checks notes*… three days ago.

True. My signup delay was only 2 weeks or so though, so I came here with messageboard culture - so, much easier for me to adapt to the tone here
I'm going to choose to laugh. It's going to take some time for things to settle.
I'm only sad that my "join date" was overwritten when I moved instances, now I look like a n00b. Argh.
Me too :)
(Hmm, that should be something that gets migrated over – along with posts, which I only just learned recently aren’t. It’s not the server that should matter but the account itself.)
My point is that the community is the fediverse, not the instance.
Am I not in a community because I run an instance of one? I am. It’s called the fediverse :)
(And my personal corner of it formed of the people I follow and the people who follow me.)
@alan
I'll take the opposite stance. The instance is at best tangential to what I see as community. It's a place where I might be more likely to find that community, but in fact I'm drawing people from all over the fediverse.
For me community is the subset of people I follow with whom I have multiple positive interactions/conversations, and new connections that come from them. The other people I follow are curated sources of information.
ha! I had that the other day. Someone who joined last month ranting that I was going to build something which didn't respect the norms of this place.
Like… a) no I wasn't and b) that's not how decentralisation works my friend.
Oh well, it'll settle down soon.
I know. Bad me. I’ll go stand in the corner and think about what I just did, should I?
:P
They apparently thought that my “Free speech may be invaluable but hate speech costs just $7.99 a month.” post was an “extreme and biased opinion” that had no place being here.
*shrug* :)
(And thank you, the feeling’s mutual.) :)
If there's such a thing as a sardonic emoji, imagine that I've inserted it here ..

Wow. OK. So, first off, you’re not a refugee. People fleeing war are refugees. Get over yourself.
Secondly, you decided to come onto my instance to tone police my post.
Finally, *this* is exactly the kind of Twitter-esque bullshit I don’t need here so please mute/block me if you don’t want to see my posts and go away. I didn’t even mention it was you because I didn’t want anyone to pile onto you but, hey, thanks for outing yourself.
Goodness!

It was more of a problem for the obnoxiously behaved when there were less people around, who won't interact with them. Barren place if you annoyed everyone. Hope that won't change.
Look at the recent post by the founder of Mastodon. He is very clear all are welcome and that different subcommunities can have different norms.
This tone policing ssems to be just as bad (from my view) than any bad stuff on the bird site, and likely to put people off

Dear Twitter ex-pats. When we all flounced out of Twitter loudly proclaiming we were going to Mastodon this sent a message to trolls, nazis that they could set up servers & come here.
If anyone gets harrassed with hatespeech pls note that that is not the culture of Mastodon. Please report & block those users. If you notice a pattern from the same weird domain, block that domain, write a post of the server name w/ a hashtag fediblock so your server admin can follow up & block it for everyone.

So anytime someone does something on the Internet that other people don't like (but isn't illegal, immoral or harming anyone) everyone should crap on it? Just let the guy run his hobby site. Sure, I get the points made by that thread and that's fair for people that understand. But there are a lot of new people that don't know how to find their friends or fans of people that want to follow the correct account. Any benefit of that site will go away once the big migration is over and things go back to normal conversations on Mastodon.
Let's simply help new people learn the proper methods of verification here on Mastodon. Nearly every server is run by volunteers as essentially a hobby. If people are going to demand a hobby website helping people (even if you don't agree with how) be shutdown, then what happens when people start demanding Mastodon instances get shut down because they disagree with how they are operated?
Mastodon instances get defederated when they are "bad". Do the same here, just don't use the site if you don't like it. Simple. No need to attack it.
@Jesse Brown It's a very straightforward target list for anyone unscrupulous enough to use it and make a big splash because of the very nature of the list. It has the potential to put a big strain on the moderation team of any instance that is represented on this list, for a negligible gain. The friction to discovery on the Fediverse isn't a problem to fix, it's an inherent feature to keep its communities loosely connected but at a certain distance, and not a massive central public place like Twitter is and has shown its limits.
If you want to wish happy birthday to Neil Gaiman on the Fediverse, you'll find his account one way or another.
But why would you want to wish happy birthday to all the Fediverse accounts of people who were verified or with more than 50-100k followers on Twitter?
I see where you are coming from. I'm sorry I don't agree. I think for a communications platform it should be easier to find people you want to communicate with, not harder. Profiles that are marked as searchable should be easy to search, but they are not. Saying it is "by design" may be true, but it doesn't make it a good design. Anyone that wants to remain less discoverable has the ability to configure those settings on their account (usually they are set that way by default). But again, these people on that site are people that want followers and want their old followers to find them.
I don't understand where the strain on the moderation team would occur. If those people are going to be attacked it will happen eventually anyway.
I appreciate you taking the time to discuss this with me. Maybe @DataDrivenMD can look over this thread and consider what was said.
@Jesse Brown Maybe they would be harassed no matter what, but this website gives an incentive to harass them all at the same time.
And I don't believe we should entertain "people that want followers and want their old followers to find them". For all I care, they can stay on Twitter for this purpose. People who have been on the Fediverse before Musk's takeover have not had the use of a centralized list of high-profile accounts to make meaningful social media connections between each other.

@Hal Until you read their Twitter bio, where they mention their Mastodon.social account URL: twitter.com/shanselman
This one was easy. 😋
@Hal I do not have a personal quarrel with the services that use the Twitter API to scour your contacts' profile for links to their Fediverse profile, because it doesn't involve a giant public list of high-profile accounts.
The important part is the control, who's in control of the process? In the case of the app you just mentioned, nothing happens if a user doesn't plug in their Twitter account, and even if they do, none of their data is published.
This site? I don't even know if all the people on this list actually reached out or if the collection process started manually.
Hypolite Petovan likes this.
Just because the service exists does not necessarily give the service credibility. This person is not in charge of Mastodon or any part of the Fediverse but their own if they host their own.
But yes, this is a dumb idea. However, I don't care if they do it or not because it doesn't mean anything.
Hypolite Petovan likes this.
At first I thought it was a good idea, but then I thought of the possible future of this project. If this catches on, everyone will be verified through a single person. And without implying anything evil, that person could make devastating mistakes.
Single point of authority and single point of responsibility.
This won't work long term. We have to come up with something better. It's a neat list though. That's all it is. A nice list.
Everyone, get verified through your personal website. If you need to be verified, you should also have a personal website, which is, in turn, verfified through TLS.

Something that new users arriving from #twitter - especially those who know how it feels to be targeted by a toxic group - need to remember: if you started here on a random server just to start somwehere and that server later turns out not to care well enough for a civil tone on their instance, you can move your entire account to a new server with a better blocking list.
