Did you know Monopoly was invented by a woman named Elizabeth Magie in 1903?
Originally ‘The Landlord’s Game,’ it was designed as a protest against the big monopolists like Carnegie & Rockefeller.
But it was Charles Darrow, an unemployed salesman, who eventually sold it to Parker Brothers after playing a version.
Parker Brothers credited Monopoly with saving their company. Magie died in 1948 without recognition. Darrow became very wealthy & his legend lives on. #history #women #HistoryRemix

Okay~ *deep breath* Big news! It's taken about twenty hours over the past week, but I think we've pretty much finished setting up our new #OutcastCreatorCollective #discord server, where #contentcreator and their supporters can commiserate, collaborate, share resources, or otherwise form a #community of supportive friends who are interested in lifting each other up so we can keep up the fight. The server is especially intended for those who are fighting against #thepatriarchy, standing up for #racialjustice, #feminism, #lgbtqia rights, #disability activism, #mentalhealth , #normalizenudity, #sexworkers , #houseless advocacy, and so much more.
Please note that we are NOT welcoming to those who often complain the most about "having their free speech suppressed"--you don't have to be a #progressive #activist to join, but you're unlikely to enjoy yourself if you aren't at least left-of-center.
You don't have to be an "outcast creator" or their supporter to join, but be aware that our focus is to be a safe place for those who are, so respectful behavior is mandatory! If you're not yet a content creator but you would like to get advice and encouragement from others who are, you may be interested in joining as well. :)
While we're still testing out anti-trolling safety measures (that's what took up so much time this week 😅 ) we're keeping the link direct-invite-only, so if you'd like to join, please DM me and I'll give you the link. Also please let anyone you know who might be interested in joining about our new server!
Sorry for all the exclamation points, I'm just really excited 😁

This from @stokel gels with what we saw but adds very useful quantification: a small subset of users talking about leaving Twitter (1.6 percent) have "wholly abandoned the platform," but many are creating lifeboats on other platforms in case they need them - but not leaving entirely. Taking the first steps out the door but not out fully (not yet, anyway.)

I explicitly chose *not* to delete my account because I wanted to direct folks here. I.e. I updated my profile with my masto account, pinned a tweet saying I'd moved, and then locked my profile.
So I wouldn't be counted in this article despite no longer using Twitter.
I'd love to measure relative use on the platforms but that's a lot more difficult. Maybe take a good sized representative sample of accounts and dig into their activity?

Really good point Justin.
We pretty much bunched them into "emerging = new to most Twitter users" versus "Legacy" - once many Twitter users would already know.
Could have made that clearer than I did in the article.
I mean technically Mastodon launched in 2016, so it's defintely "legacy" and not "emerging," by that count -- but I suspect relatively few Twitter users knew it 10 weeks ago.
The Holocaust did not begin with killing; it began with words.
Genocides do not start with mass murder. That's where they end up.
Genocides & other mass atrocity crimes begin with words - specifically, with powerful people dehumanizing a minority.
Once they are seen as less than human, anything is possible, even mass murder.

However, staying on Twitter is what makes the platform valuable. It enriches those who own the platform. When (not if) people leave Twitter, the company loses its value; conversely, staying ensures the platform has value. Also, this:

Unfortunately, it took another 30-60 years for women to be permitted to go about their business of the day in practical clothes with their legs covered.
Even as an 8-year old walking to school in January in a dress in the 60's, I knew that everything in life was going to be harder and more uncomfortable simply because I was a girl.
Arbitrary social dictums about women's appearance were enforced by codes and punishments.
And these sort of arbitrary discriminatory dress policies are still playing out today -- school dress codes routinely force Black children in the US to conform to white norms on appearance, with drastic punishments on those who do not comply. We have not come far as a society at all.
Here's more about her:
Helen Louise Hulick Beebe (December 27, 1908 – March 18, 1989) was an American educator and pioneer of auditory-verbal therapy. In 1938, she made headlines when a judge jailed her for wearing trousers while appearing as a witness in court.
I love the etymology of "progress". I think genxers and our parent's gen were "walking forward", now my kids are running. We learnt about the suffragettes in primary school, the lesson was "mission accomplished", not that it was a waystop on a longer journey. Futurists talked about the spike in relation to technology, but we're seeing the same acceleration with culture. The old fart who sent that young lawyer to jail failed to learn what I have in the last few years - that you may as well stand and shake your fist at an incoming tidal wave as resist these social changes. It's not our world anymore, it's theirs.
(And I, for one, welcome our teenage overlords 😄)

Ps this is from a straight married man. Never been to a drag show. Not interested but you are absolutely correct.
Its certainly one of the creepiest and sickest things parents engage in.
It smacks heavily of child abuse and very unsavory voyeurism by adults who need to get a life. I've only heard of it happening in the US.
These people who go on about "drag shows" would be apopletic about British parents.
