I don’t understand why people think Mastodon is difficult. It seems pretty straightforward, and the separate servers are no biggie. I’m enjoying this fresh start here, like moving to a new apartment!

I keep heart nag that Mastodon is difficult, too, but frankly I can’t do ndetstand why people say that.

So glad you are here, George! Thanks for joining Mastodon, and thanks for all the great work you do for all of us. 👍

you have to admit it would be very funny if twitter collapses before trump can get his account back

Not All Twieer Celebrities, but you can definitely tell that's why a lot of them immediately give up on using mastodon. "where's my adoring public?! Don't they know who I am??"

Remember how recently Musk was flogging the Tesla bot - and massive procreation - as the remedy to the overclass’s “labor constraints”? Because Musk wants explicitly wants people he can enslave, underpay, and mistreat—people act like bots. I wrote about this part of the Musk madness this month @WIRED

The #population of the world has nearly quadrupled since my mother was born. She's in her 70s. #8billion
in reply to Virginia Heffernan

his use of “constraint” in this context made me think he somehow views the world through the lens of Eli Goldratt’s book about managing industrial manufacturing processes, “The Goal: A Process Of Ongoing Improvement.” Is he considering centralized global population control as a solution? That’d be fn scary. idk Anyway, this reply is a test. I’m new here and reblogged the op and am trying to comment on the reblog, but think it may appear in the op thread too.

Just sifting through screenshots to add to my banned page and haha remember that time Instagram banned me for posting a picture of Seth Meyers holding an L with the description "men are dumb"? #fascism #thepatriarchy #censorship

See hundreds more screenshots of every time #toplesstopics was #banned from every #socialmedia and video hosting platform you've heard of and some you haven't at toplesstopics.org/banned 🙃

I just got this email threat from #DisneyPlus. They are forcing paying customers to divulge ad targeting data under the threat of loss of service.

Like @pluralistic says, even when we pay, we are still the product.

I for one will see how this plays out and then cancel.

Putting this out there. How difficult would it be to create a child friendly "pod" of the Fediverse? That way kids could have a corporate free, somewhat federated, social media option

In my few decaes experience education works infinitely better than restricting technology. An instance offering friendly help to kids, explanation about what to look for an how to report immediately if youáre feeling threatened, and the admins acting on them quickly and hunt down reported actors may work. Indeed, itád require dedication and definite amount of human resources.
May start as an allowlist instance, but it won't last long it it stayed so.

I think that's true for regular federation, and it might be true for this, IDK, that's why I'm asking. For all I know it's been tried and failed, or tried and thriving for it's community

I did a little comparison: reach and reaction on Twitter and Mastodon.

I picked a subject typical of my feed and reworded it to be more native to Mastodon. Same link, issue, people, tone.

With 309 K followers on Twitter it got 81 shares and 179 likes

With 8.5 K followers on Mastodon: 123 shares and 195 likes.

Here are the two posts:

twitter.com/jayrosen_nyu/statu… [305K followers, 81 shares, 179 likes]

mastodon.social/@jayrosen_nyu/… [8.5K followers, 123 RT, 195 likes]

...no algorithm, fewer users = fewer posts to contend with. This is usually the case with any "new" network. If more people come, eventually you could get drowned out with a lower S/N ratio.

Just got tone-policed and told I should go back to Twitter by someone who joined Mastodon… *checks notes*… three days ago.

Welcome to the fediverse. Please leave your entitlement at the door. Thank you.

must admit some of your old twitter rants are "acquired taste" Aral. 😁👍

i've been a silent reader for years, and it's so funny to hear that some random would tell you such a thing 😅

so now that i'm reacting, well i'd like you to know i'm very happy with the fact that you do what you do, and i deeply thank you for that !

(it wont erase this asshole's words but hey, it's still a good opportunity to let you know i think the opposite 😁 )

Dear Twitter ex-pats. When we all flounced out of Twitter loudly proclaiming we were going to Mastodon this sent a message to trolls, nazis that they could set up servers & come here.

If anyone gets harrassed with hatespeech pls note that that is not the culture of Mastodon. Please report & block those users. If you notice a pattern from the same weird domain, block that domain, write a post of the server name w/ a hashtag fediblock so your server admin can follow up & block it for everyone.

in reply to Caffe Neko

i’m hesitant to encourage block lists but would if there was a reliable and trustworthy body with appropriate checks that could manage one designed specifically to protect against hate speech.
in reply to Dell Cameron 🐈‍⬛

My guess is that with the # fediblock tag, that server moderators who follow it use it to research reported servers and add them to the block list for their own instance.

#Mastodon users, please vote No on this poll about the future of a centralized (I cannot make this up) service to verify the identity of Mastodon accounts of people who had either an actual Twitter verified account or more than 50,000 followers on Twitter.

in reply to Hypolite Petovan

Verifying Accounts should be firmly in the control of users as it already is.

I would vote NO.

Look, say what you will about trans people seeking out hormone therapy.

But I'm a cis dude and as soon as I turned 40, my entire Facebook feed became 50% testosterone ads.

Gender affirming treatment is a thing for everybody, you're only bothered when some people do it in a way you don't agree with.

Facts. I’m a 52 year-old cis woman, and I’m on what is pretty routinely-prescribed HRT. It’s not a big deal, and it’s no one’s business.
