Rosalind Franklin’s research was crucial to discovering DNA’s double helix structure 🧬 but it was James Watson & Francis Crick who received the credit & Nobel Prize.
Unknown to Franklin, the pair saw her unpublished data & X-ray diffraction images, inspiring their model. They never acknowledged her contribution until after her death.

I think it was also because she was dead when they gave out the Nobel prize, and the novel is not given posthumously.

Actually Watson & Crick did acknowledge Franklin & Goslin for figure 1 (the fibre diffraction diagram) in their 1953 paper.

I so agree that Rosalind Franklin’s treatment by her male colleagues was dismissive of her important work. In terms of the Noble: she had died a few years before Watson and Crick were nominated, thus making her ineligible.

Rosalind Franklin should be featured on the American Women's Quarter Series. The U.S. Mint has announced who will be featured in 2023--and she is not on their list. As far as I know, the mint has not announced who will be honored in 2024 and 2025.
I don't know if the 2024 and 2025 honorees have already been chosen, and if not--how to nominate someone.

Lots. The white, entitled men of the 19th and 20th centuries stole both women and black ideas and inventions. Time for women to RULE. Except for the mindsets of MAGA Karens, women are much more sharing and empathetic.
In the middle of March 1953, Wilkins and Franklin were invited to Cambridge to see the (Watson/Crick) model, and they immediately agreed it must be right. It was agreed that the model would be published solely as the work of Watson and Crick, while the supporting data would be published by Wilkins and Franklin.
learning this as a child in school, I always thought it strange that they got the credit for her work. Not surprising though.

I think it is important to make this distinction: W-C proposed a double-helical structure based on the evidence at that time, including the Franklin-Gosling image that was shown to them, unbeknownst to Rosalind. They did not discover the double-helical structure.

I am not against woman or man, but agree that credit needs to go to where credit is due, be it man or woman. We as mankind need to acknowledge each other as a united front, in unity-together.
In his book Double Helix, Watson admits to stealing Linus Pauling's research and says Roslind Franklin would have looked better if she wore lipstick. That Watson and Crick won a Nobel prize is a travesty. Jonas Salk should have won a Nobel prize that year.

Sonora Babb was born in Indian territory in what eventually became Oklahoma, raised on a sorghum farm. Though she didn't start school until she was 11, she became valedictorian. The WPA hired her to document the Oakies. Her editor secretly loaned her research to John Steinbeck, who used it to write the Grapes of Wrath. When she finished her book, she was told there was no market for it due to the success of Steinbeck's book. Her own didn't get published for decades.

Franklin’s contribution is now regularly taught in Massachusetts high school biology classes, as it should be (please no CRT or leftist woke comments…oh yeah, this is Mastodon).
never forget that the first woman to win a nobel prize (marie curie) almost didn't, pierre curie was told that she wouldn't be given the award, and he had to insist marie be credited. she went on to win another nobel prize roughly a decade later, then have a daughter who also won the nobel prize.

Franklin was totally burned. I bring this up with my students every chance I get.
Quite a lot - women were to be seen and not heard - I've published just a few books from records of more or less anonymous women
same story with Hahn and Strassmann: they received Nobel prize, but Lise Meitner was excluded, despite she recognized as first human fission as reason for their results
That always pissed me off, that Watson stole her work!
this is one of the worst examples of women getting screwed over in science. People revere Watson who is actually a really shitty person in person
This is one of the most shameful scientific injustices of all time, in my view. She should be awarded the Nobel Prize posthumously.

Here is an act of vandalism I totally get behind: people kept adding Franklin's name to the commemorating plaque on the wall of the Eagle pub Watson and Crick first announced their discovery in Cambridge. It was erased many times, but kept coming back. Eventually, the authorities decided that it was easier to leave it there.
Even such small victories are not obtained by asking politely.

I still see talented women getting pushed to the sidelines, especially in the "hard" sciences (eg. Physics). It's good to see things like this, and it would be better to see more change for the living.

Each year they do detailed research into a woman who made significant contributions to science but who is forgotten today. They have done three so far, and I am looking forward to the fourth. My modern-day hero is Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, discoverer of pulsars, who I was delighted to once meet. The very epitome of rigorous science and determination, coupled to a very humble, polite character.
it’s absolutely true that Rosalind Franklin was underappreciated and mistreated, but it’s not right to suggest that she was excluded from the Nobel Prize for reasons of sexism. The Nobel for this work was awarded in 1962. Franklin died in 1958, and they don’t give them posthumously. It’s impossible to say whether se would have been included if she had lived longer.

Franklin was an absolutely brilliant experimentalist but this common take seems unfair. Her contributions were in fact acknowledged early on -- Watson was the first to suggest she should have shared in the Nobel and she became close with Crick. But her bosses at MRC were frustrated because she refused to model, and in fact she even made fun of Wilkins for proposing a helical structure. Her data were essential, she was brilliant, and I can't imagine the prejudice against women...

There's going to be a point in a few days when all these new Twitter refugees will experience what we have already: the sudden return of all our creativity because we're no longer constantly tense from the incessant flow of hot takes from Twitter gremlins. The TwitterTension will lift, the fog of 24/7 bitch mode will disperse, and they'll discover just how much Twitter actually affected their minds. It felt like I sobered up after 13 years of downers. I have had that same feeling but I wasn't really sure what to attribute it to. Was it the hot takes, or something else that made the atmosphere there toxic? Whatever it was, I definitely got a lot more anxiety there than here - to the point where I was cutting back before I had an alternative.

Kroger is like half the size of Amazon, and Amazon is half the size of Walmart. Maybe Kroger is just trying to stay competitive by scaling up so we don't get left with just two places to buy groceries.

shopping the smaller, regional chains is a way of fighting off the big chains.
Arrrrgh this is no good! Intense market concentration in this space really diminishes regional/local #foodsecurity. We should be trying, whenever possible, to use CSA, independent grocers, farmers’ markets, and smaller chains. But those options tend to be cost-prohibitive for many.
Food manufacturing & distribution are too important to trust to the free market.
I'm relying more and more on my local independent carniceria. Good avocados, meats, fish, cheeses, peppers, melons, fresh herbs, all the staples.
You know, while the local Albertsons has higher prices, they don’t have the constant problems with keeping stock the way the local Ralph’s (Kroger) does.
Hopefully this does mean Albertsons starts having problems keeping the shelves stocked.
Last I checked, Kroger already owns 20 grocery store brands.
Last time I shopped there, variety was way down, and prices way up. Even on rubber bands. (Why rubber bands?)
I thought monopolies were illegal and this is why AT&T/MaBell was broken up back in the day.

Received a digital coupon from my bank for $25 off a $50 Kroger purchase. Not a deal. Passed. Their staff is not treated well. My local store (1 mile away) is filthy. The prices are exorbitant.
here in Oregon, where I live, we have Safeway, Albertsons, Fred Meyer (Kroger), QFC (Kroger), and Winco (independent). With the take-over of Albertson’s/Safeway, it leaves us with Kroger and Winco.
toss in the fact that farmers struggle, in most cases, to make ends meet. Buy direct from the farmers where possible. May not be cheaper, and in some cases can be a tad more expensive. However, without proper support the farmers will fail and go to corporate farms, where more greed happens.
I buy most of my groceries now on Amazon Fresh. The prices are old-fashioned low, and they deliver for free. What are you gonna do?

sort of. I'm still borrowing use of someone else's peertube platform, and have a limited daily upload quota of 5gb, which means I can't get my thrice-weekly livestreams up unless I chop them into multi-day uploads. I've also learned to never trust the longevity of platforms anymore after having to reupload all my stuff to a new platform so many times x.x
