I came across a neat browser extension today. It looks for "rel=me" links pointing to mastodon profiles, and puts it in a little list for you to review.

In other words, you visit a website, and if tells you if there are any mastodon accounts associated to the website.

I gave up over a 150,000 followers on Twitter to be on Mastodon full time. Yes, the engagement and reach is a lot less, but I'll build it back up and it will be worth it. I hate to see people run back to Twitter because of friends or careers or whatever. You know what changes that? Being on Mastodon and bring those people here. Musk is a horrible person, don't be one of his enablers.

Also, it is possible to build followings on here. @thunderbird now has as many followers on here as it does on Twitter, for example.

@FediThing It's also worth mentioning the engagement here is much more meaningful.

Ron, just be you, have some nice conversations, and use relevant hashtags whenever you can.

the thing about most text-based communications and thus friendships is that much of the social fluff and filters are being stripped away, leaving only the essence of the other person. Their mental smell.

If you are able to connect on that level, you often mesh much more deeply than in-person would ever allow you to. Friendship spanning oceans are just as natural as ones spanning decades of age as ones spanning the starkest cultural divides.

@DrB_NY it’s not resistance when every tweet is adding to stats that help him sell advertising and boast higher engagement numbers than ever before. That’s the precise opposite of resistance - that’s you doing his work for him.

Unpopular opinion: we should normalize black people coming to Mastodon, being safe and speaking their minds.

They might talk about internal discomfort and biases we might hold.

It's not their responsibility to educate us. It's our responsibility to create a place where black people are accepted.

I was looking at the news this morning and I think it's the perfect time to bring this up.

"Mastodon is egalitarian. There is no problem"
"I'M not biased so it's not my problem".

There's a fair bit of work to do I'm afraid :/

Two autonomous collectives at UCSB & UC Davis have just simultaneously liberated two dining commons: De La Guerra @ UCSB & Latitude at Davis. Both are serving free meals to all until 3pm."Why it is that in the best public university system in the US, so many students are hungry?"

The fact that all it took was one foolish billionaire throwing his weight around to fuck up one of the largest websites on the internet is a perfect example of why hierarchical power is a defect, not a strength. One Black Swan event and the whole system comes unraveled.

Fast workers die young—slow down and live!

A message to workers at Twitter facing Elon Musk's new regime and to all workers everywhere.
The pressure to turn a profit is killing you, just as industrial capitalism is killing all of us. Resist and survive.

https://crimethinc.com/antiwork

"Another century like this—another century of work—and our species will be done for, along with countless others. Work—which is to say, all activity that is determined by the necessity to make a profit for someone, rather than chosen on account of its intrinsic value—is precisely what prevents us from fulfilling our needs."

Tesla / Tesly / Scamp / Scampy

This fellow's an adoptee from a cat cafe roughly six months ago. He's around 3 1/2 now, and the most loving and most mischievous little guy you could hope for.
His name's Tesla (as in Nikola), but he ends up also going by Tesly, Scamp and Scampy.
Perfect example of his scampishness? Sneaking into my backpack here.

what made you realize the United States was not the “best country in the history of the world”?

Sometimes I wonder if there’s even any actual *spirituality* in authoritarian Christianity, because the one thing I understand about engagement with the sacred is that it’s a way to cultivate awe and learn to face mystery without rushing to reduce it to something comprehensible.
