Friday Support Group
Busy session again on Friday. We got to fixing a Lenovo G550 which was
in pieces to start with. Freya did an amazing job to reassemble it. A
bit more to work to do to fully refurbish this laptop. We also worked
with another donation. It was wiped and installed with Linux Mint. As
it's quite slow, we might look to put another version of GNU / Linux or
BSD onto it. Extending the life of devices is one of the many benefits
of using GNU / Linux instead of Windows and OS X. Another of our
members has recently installed Linux Mint onto their laptop and is
getting to grips with AI. So, a diverse session!
We are working towards a permanent space in the Hub for various computer
projects. We are also looking to set up our own server. Thanks to
Ashley for providing a computer for free to do just that! We welcome
donations of devices as well as new members. Our sessions are Thursdays
2-5pm and Fridays 10am-1pm at the brilliant Swindon Hub.
Thurday Group
A busy session today with all sorts going on! Here's a selection:
We had an old USB keyboard which was awfully dirty. It had sticky and broken keys. Christopher took it home, bathed it in a cleaning solution and allowed it to dry. He then found a canny way to fixed the broken enter key.
Mohammed is a refugee from Iraq seeking asylum in this country. He is interested in learning web development. We are still working towards formal courses so, for the time being, we are offering him 1 hour 1-to-1 sessions learning HTML to start with. A laptop would help Mohammed in various ways. We provided one to him which had kindly been donated by one of our members' Mum. We refurbished the laptop and installed it with the empowering Linux Mint instead of Windows.
A great session and pleased to be serving the Swindon community!!
