So apparently all the coordination, planning and communications for organising No Kings events on Instagram have disappeared and the account admins have been suspended.
So... here's the thing:
DON'T PLAN YOUR REVOLUTION ON THE KING'S BLACKBOARD.
The fact that organisers are depending on the availability of a platform run by any of the tech bros... well, it makes me think you aren't a terribly effective opposition.

And then have it go down exactly when you need it.
This reeks of people, of organizers who do not really understand what they are up against at all.
I'm sorry, you do not organize against a hegemony on the hegemony's platform. You literally can't. And you need to communicate that to 'the people'. Maybe doing so with also make it clear what they're fighting for more powerfully

Secondly, you're wannabe shit disturbing fantasist with a very poor grasp of history.
Mao caused the death of approximately 20 million of his own people. He starved them, he worked them to death, he sacrificed them to industrial hellscapes, to poisoned earth, to treatable disease.
Now it will be my distinct pleasure to flush you from my timeline like the shitty poseur you are.

If one is technically inclined, then clicking on a fedi link and landing on a foreign instance website doesn't seem too bad... we hopscotch right over that inconvenience. But most other people won't realize what happened and they will be confused/angry that Mastodon has "forgot" their login & won't let them access functions etc. This happens because the ActivityPub spec is incomplete; it should have defined a protocol handler.

in reply to Madeleine Morris • • •What is the point of offering people a tech adventure (chaos)? If something presents itself as broken, then in the users' minds its broken; they'll move on.
Fedi culture is broken, too. The same people telling me the above is OK UX are also saying that teaching users to be aware of domain name spelling (with https) is a big infosec No-no. A tech culture that bases itself on disparate domains but doesn't think users should have literacy about domain names probably deserves to die out. (Keeping in mind that fedi is like 85% tech pros & enthusiasts.)
Bluesky "solved" this problem by making all links point to bsky.app. This makes it centralized, but bsky's backers don't really want decen.

Also, most people involved in causes aren't super dedicated. They'll sign a petition or join a protest once or twice, but only if it's fun and you make it easy for them.

I guess Meta is betting the Trump admin will steal the election, and proceed to ban all other social media, because they just gave tens of millions of people the perfect excuse to leave and never come back.
There's no other way to square this circle. They're all in.

in reply to Madeleine Morris • • •It's anything BUT a revolution. "No Kings" is financed and run by the DNC, who in turn are financed and owned by the oligarchs. The No Kings events are just pressure valves designed to let neoliberals blow off steam and tell themselves that they're making a difference, while in fact all they're doing is supporting the fascist Powers-That-Be.
That's why they never ask for impeachment. Or an end to the genocide in Gaza. Or the imposition of ANY meaningful taxes on billionaires.
And the "protests" are always held on Saturdays, just to make 100% sure that they won't turn into anything like a general strike.
The Democratic Party is the second string team for fascism. And BOTH parties are owned by the same Nazi billionaires.

It is what we do with it and what we demand of it and how we shape it (where we can) that matters. But we can and should mitigate the perils as much as we can.
And yes, you are right: the internet is not a safe space. But then where is a safe space?
I agree wholeheartedly that meeting in the flesh is good - not just to lessen dependence on digital communication - but because what is experienced in the body more powerful.

THEY WERE USING INSTAGRAM TO PROMOTE THEIR EVENT. IF THEY ONLY WANTED 5 PEOPLE TO SHOW UP, THEY COULD HAVE USED MASTODON.

If they depend on a platform owned by someone who has a specific interest in hindering their organization, then people will get confused and stay at home.
The solution is to train people into using alternative forms of communication. And the actual act of training people to on teach using mastodon, will, in itself create a community of trust.

But how can we manage to get to those young people they should reach their grandparents and ask them for the forgotten knowledge of prehistorical technology called e-mail.
Me thinks the client for this still are on the phones, just buried deep. I know, it is very demanding to learn how to use email client, but it is only about the last thing that can be silenced by the #technazi bros – as long as the mail address ends in .eu .de .pl .no or .ch
Proton even is giving special e-mail accounts for organizing:

All these morons going to BlueSky and similar don't "get" that the trap is to make it feel functional enough ... and then they shut the jaws of the trap just before elections to maximize the impact and leave the victims with too little time to recover.
FWIW, No Kings/Indivisible are also here on Mastodon. So they're doing better than most. But their followers elsewhere? No excuse.

No Kings was organizing on IG because IG is where the people are. There is now clear evidence that it is time for the people to change that fact.
That was a tactic even Trump's people managed to figure out: when Meta booted him, he had Truth Social spun up on Mastodon's codebase

Love it or hate it, the internet has changed us profoundly - socially and individually. It isn't going away. The challenge is, to find a way to keep the things we cared about before it came, and to mitigate the obvious damage it can do.
We can never go home. But we can have some say in the new place we find ourself in.
tom jennings
in reply to Madeleine Morris • • •Right. There's no back to go to, though I didn't have that in mind. All i meant is it means not swallowing the ideologies and myths about the Internet as freedom. The 1995 promises (implications, really) run deep. Phone lines were bad enough; but they were at least regulated, fwiw. Those don't even exist any more.
We have Internet tools that work, but none of them are "convenient" in the way meta google apple's are. Almost no one I know irl wil change their the daily habits. Its maddening and frustrating.
Maybe metas recent act will have some effect.
