LA Times: The surprising reason California survived record summer heat without blackouts

"...In fact, the state has not issued a Flex Alert since 2022, and it has not implemented rotating outages since 2020.

Over the last few years, California has quietly but dramatically increased the resiliency of its electrical grid through a significant expansion in battery energy storage.

These batteries hold onto solar energy captured during the day, so it can be sent to the grid as demand peaks in the evening and morning, when most people are at home running air conditioners and other appliances. ..."

(paywall, but gist of it is in the paragraph above).

From Ryan Hall Y’all on FB: The ocean off Baja has never been this warm.

85 degrees on Monday, in water that should be 70 this time of year.

45 years of satellite records. The old record was 81.

That water is why Los Angeles felt like 108 on Wednesday. Warm ocean, more humidity, and Marie pulled it all north.

It was still 84 on Wednesday, the latest reading.

We are watching it.

"Wall time" in Ventura County is now over 1 hour. That's the amount of time ambulances are having to wait at the emergency room because beds are not open. #heatwave #CAwx #VenturaCounty

It looks like it'll be another hot one in #Monterey today.

#CaWx

Inside the house it's currently 77f at 5am. Outside it's 70f.

This is really hot for behind #Monterey high school.

I'm afraid today will be pretty miserable.

#CaWx

It's currently 87f outside and 83f inside at our place behind #Monterey high school. This is the hottest day of the year so far for us.

#CaWx

It's 86F already (!! 6:35am) over in Agoura. It's supposed to get to 94F (!!) in Santa Barbara... by the ocean. Where it's not supposed to get that hot.

(Except that one time in historical record, which was quite the exception, and not extremely reliable, and questionable, for sure).

#CAwx #heatwave

Wow, air temps already rising, it's only 6:20am in the morning.

(76.7F outside before the sun is up).

It's going to be H.O.T. today.

ABC7:Coastal damage and a looming El Niño prompt warnings for homeowners to review insurance coverage

"...Sinkholes and beach erosion are typically classified by insurers as "earth movement" and basic policies very likely do not cover it, according to insurance experts. ...ooding poses another gap. Very few homeowners carry flood insurance and insurers often deny claims when waves push water onto a property and cause damage. In those cases, carriers may say flood insurance was required for a payout...."

🥵

101.6F, 33% humidity, heat index is 106.9F.

(I am indoors, air conditioning is on, so I am fine... but.... yeesh).

(and yes, yes, some future September 9th, the universe willing, I will look at this fondly "look! it was only 106.9F heat index, instead of 134F! Do you remember when we didn't have to jump in the refrigerated survival pods during heatwaves?")

Well, that's one way to drop the air temperature... down to 68.6F

Me: ah, no more rain forecast, I'll bring the patio cushions back out!

Sky, 5 min later: more rain! Tropical rain from Marie!

#CAwx #rain

We may seem some genuinely extreme humidity levels along SoCal coastal plain Tue-Wed (yes, even worse than today). As Marie's tropical moisture lingers, temps of 90-100F will combine with dew points of 70F to nearly 80F (!), yielding heat index values as high as ~110F. #CAwx
