Weird Tales — March 1924 issue (Volume III – Number 3). Featured story: "The Spirit Fakers of Hermannstadt" by Houdini, billed as "The Most Miraculous True Story Ever Written." Cover art signed "Mally" at lower right, by R. M. Mally. The illustration depicts a muscular, nearly nude man standing in a dim stone chamber, turned in three-quarter profile toward the right. He has short, slicked-back black hair and a stern, downcast expression with closed eyes. Heavy black leather-and-iron manacles bind his wrists together in front of his hips; matching cuffs encircle his upper arms and ankles, connected by thick dark chains that loop and drape to the ground. His skin is rendered in warm peach and orange tones, highlighted on the chest, shoulder, and thigh where a narrow shaft of pale yellow light angles down from the upper right. The background is a murky gradient of olive green, dark brown, and near-black, suggesting dank earthen walls. At the figure's bare feet on the dirt floor lie scattered human remains: a pale grey-white skull tipped forward with hollow eye sockets, a skeletal hand thrust upward with splayed fingers, and further bones fading into shadow at lower right. The logo "Weird Tales" arcs across the top in bold white script outlined in red-orange, above the red subtitle "THE UNIQUE MAGAZINE."
