I had high hopes for this opinion piece, in which they thoughtfully added links to share on all the top evil social media platforms. But early on they lost me with this statement:
"Social media, broadly speaking, in and of itself is not inherently harmful."
Seriously?

When Summer Screen Time Poses a Mental Health Risk for Teens
Beyond headlines and courtrooms, many families are seeking an answer to a more immediate question: How do we know when social media use is affecting a teenager’s mental health?Lance Garrison, Ph.D. (Psychology Today)
We are really glad to see @openpetition here. They were our choice to host the petition for the #LeaveX, in January 2025.

We tried to host our letter (leavex.eu/letter) at the official petition website of the @EUCommission , but it was refused. We considered @campact as well, but they seem too focused on their own bubble, while Open Petition more international.
The more organized civil society becomes active on the #Fediverse, the better.
Social media is turning into a freak show

The ecosystem is unhealthy, especially on X/Twitter, and that's producing some strange beasts among the most influential accounts.

Social media is turning into a freak show
The ecosystem is incredibly unhealthy, especially on Twitter. But if it dies, good riddance.Nate Silver (Silver Bulletin)
"Big Tech has been addicting and harming our kids for years, and they knew it." I keep hearing this from politicians. Fair enough.
But I rarely see the same energy directed at parents. I've seen mobile devices used as digital pacifiers. I've seen adults glued to their phones while supposedly supervising their children.
How can someone who can't put their phone down be expected to set limits for their kids?
Further than that. If our decision makers can't either and are still using disinformation tools like X, then maybe it's time for a more honest conversation about the harms caused by big tech social media.
As early as 2 years ago, many people in #Germany and #Europe felt that #BigTech ’s internet platforms did not live up to the claim of being #socialmedia. Many were appalled by the #hatespeech, #incitement, #cyberbullying, and #disinformation being spread there.
Our action alliance first reached out to #universities to propose withdrawing from #X and adopting #Mastodon. We believe the #Fediverse platforms are much better suited for #SciComm or, more broadly, for substantive discourse aimed at protecting and preserving our #democracy. Other initiatives have since emerged, such as #ByeByeElon, #HelloQuitX, #LeaveX, and #SaveSocial.
We’ve already seen some initial success: around 150 #academic institutions in Germany are active on Mastodon and have +157k followers there

We believe this is an approach we can also recommend to the #research and #academic communities in the #US to fend off attacks from #autocrats .

Great article!
EN: For government agencies, X has long ceased to be a neutral channel for information. It carries high risks but has limited reach—and where posts do gain visibility, they often fuel outrage, right-wing mobilization, and a toxic comments section. Those who want to combat disinformation should stop bolstering Musk’s platform with government presence and instead strengthen alternatives.

the #LeaveX campaign doesn't rule out #Bluesky, but we favor the Fediverse and particularly #Mastodon. See our message:

We discussed this with @_elena during #FOSDEM. Specifically, we believe that the Fediverse is the most resilient solution. However, we don't want to exclude the possibility of building *bridges* with the millions of people who have chosen Bluesky. (cc @bjoernsta)

Concrete European alternatives to X: Mastodon and Open Portability
On January 22, MEPs Alexandra Geese and Veronika Cifrová Ostrihoňová were contacted per email regarding these proposals. We will publish their responses here if they answer.Leave X - Protect Democracy
Below are some compelling arguments that align with the rationale behind the #LeaveX campaign and the letter addressing decision-makers in January 2025 and supported by thousands of Europeans leavex.eu/letter
We are glad that more and more people are realizing this, and we hope that more public institutions, as well as the people we elect and financially support, will join the #Fediverse.

I just received the latest book from @davidchavalarias, directly from him. It examines the person trying to destroy our democracies and the methods being used.
Merci beaucoup, David !
the strategy of the #LeaveX campaign is to bring politicians out of X

They bring most of the visibility today and provide an excuse for media outlets and people who follow politics to be there.
There are still several million people using X on a daily basis.

Regulating the business model of big tech social media, particularly targeted advertising and algorithmic manipulation, is much more difficult.
Why not remove the incentives for platforms to maximize engagement through outrage or addictive algorithms?
The answer is that it takes *courage*.
