2/2. This bull snake was lying on a boulder exactly where I wanted to be. Shortly after I got to that spot, it began to slowly slither in my direction. It didn’t seem to be at all affected by my presence— it just wanted to go in my direction. I don’t know whether to be relieved or insulted! 🤣 After I backed up about 20 feet, there was space for me to get back to the original spot to take to pic of the creek. I found a baby garter snake to show Ellie when she gets up. My mom used to catch spiders, insects and snakes to show us when we were kids. She once caught a baby copperhead while cleaning her yucca plants. My dad just shook his head.

I was up near the front of the hike this morning when this enormous rattler took exception to our use of the trail. Western diamondback, I think, and definitely the biggest #rattlesnake I've ever seen. Also a good test of the telephoto on my new phone camera.

#PhotoOfTheDay is an old snapshot I took of a colorful California king snake I encountered while hiking in the Santa Cruz mountains near Mt. Umunhum.
I've come across king snakes over the years while hiking, but the others have all been the brown-patterned variety. This was the only one I've encountered with the red coloring, and it really gets your attention on the trail!
