Have been experimenting with #awesomewm but not sure what add-ons are good in this ecosystem.

I like that it's in #lua because I use WezTerm and Neovim, having one configuration language to rule them all is neat.

How can I configure it to work similarly to #i3 with Polybar add-ons etc? I don't care that much about visual effects; only speed and good workflows.

Kinda frustrated with the state of #desktops in #Linux / #BSD / #Unix

You can either have a fully functional, but kind of frustrating-to-use (too mouse-centric) desktop with Gnome or KDE Plasma, or you can have a lean, efficient, and fast wm/compositor like #i3, #sway #awesomewm #evilwm, #cwm, #bspwm, or whatever you like, BUT you will constantly be scratching your head when #Gnome and #GTK programs either start very slowly or refuse to run at all, and are constantly trying to figure out what combination of configuration, daemon, and small animal sacrifices are necessary to do what the big, bloated desktops do automatically.

It's freaking exhausting, and I want to go back to the days that every one just ran #IceWM, #Enlightenment, or #WindowMaker.

P.S., Just for clarity, I really do love #KDE #Plasma. I think it's a wonderful, easy-to-use, and extremely flexible desktop. But sometimes I really don't want a desktop, I just want a lean-and-basic UI that stays out of my way (for home stuff vs. work stuff, generally).

I don't know if it's because of all the months I've spent using and configuring #AwesomeWM or because #python is so much more powerful and easy to read and write than #lua (at least to me), but in the last couple of days I've been giving a shot at #qtile and it's just great.

It took me just a few hours to replicate my Awesome set up, and although people really like to say "python == slow", it feels smoother and snappier than any other TWM I've used so far.

Kudos to Qtile!

Looking at #lightweight #Linux distros and window managers. I already know I like #CrunchBang and its standard #OpenBox from when I last daily-drove Linux, So #CrunchBang++ and #BunsenLabs are obvious first picks, and have already made it onto my #Easy2Boot / #Ventoy #LiveUSB, but I've also peeked at #Nobara and decided to try it on for size as well.

Looking at a few other window managers, I was pretty impressed by #AwesomeWM and have also heard good things about #FluxBox.

All will suit my needs more or less equally (and any can be modified or switched), that each just have unique flavors, quirks, and footprints.

It's let's install #linux day.

I tried installing minimal #debian with #awesomewm + #lightdm and I fucked up my lightdm.conf so that nothing was able to start.

New plan: install Debian with #xfce so that xorg/lightdm/etc actually works, and then uninstall what I don't want, and try adding awesome again. 1/

I managed to move to #AwesomeWM from #dwm, after discovering that #suckless folks are a bunch of nazis.
Also, I had some stability issues that with all the C patching were hard to debug.
I gotta say dwm's workflow and defaults are just great, though, and I HAD to replicate most of it in Awesome.

It's not a minimalistic wm, it has so many features by default but such a great documentation though.

The problem is that I'm definitely not a fan of #lua, but I'll take it over nazis anytime. #linux

Maybe look at #e16, #openbox, #fluxbox, or #awesomewm, as they will be completely usable without any pre-configuration. Those will all give you a pretty well rounded feel for the comparison of window manager vs desktop environment. All are quite easy to hack on and decently documented. The appilcations menu for e16 should be auto-generated on first login, both openbox and fluxbox will most likely need to be generated manually, and awesome should just be ready to use as-is.

What's the reason for installing a DE alongside #AwesomeWM? Is it just for a file manager, terminal, etc? Could be those are better installed separately vice a whole DE for a few programs. There also may be similar programs that suit your needs that are not part of any DE.

Hmm, #firefox has been forgetting all my logins ever since I switched to #awesomewm
In fact, it looks like it deletes all cookies. I disabled that function (it actually was already disabled for some reason, maybe it forgot that too)

I wonder if this is some sort of issue with the keyring which is not #kde kwallet anymore, or something else
