Half An Idea

I have had half an idea. I may decide to present to a wider audience some or all of the many essays, journal entries, and academic papers I have written over the decades. While some people, apparently, have binders full of women, I have binders full of miscellaneous thoughts and I feel the urge to expose them to the world.

Some of those thoughts were created through handwriting, some through typing on a mechanical typewriter, and some emerged through various stages of electronic record-keeping, and I have held on to the oldest of these documents for over fifty years.

I have already shredded a lot of writings that were personal communications between my late husband and me, and which were never intended to be read by others, but I have since wondered if that was a bad choice. Regardless, they are now gone.

So, as I thought about what to do with these other non-personal writings, it occurred to me that you might be able to help me figure out what to do. My initial idea is that I could create a new page on this blog and devote it to publishing some of this stuff. That lead to a series of questions for which I don’t have answers. That is where you come in. Please let me know your thoughts.

1. Should I publish none of them, all of them, or just some of the best/worst/most provocative?
2. Should I correct all the grammatical and/or spelling errors, or publish them as I wrote them?
3. Should I publish them in chronological order, or in some sort of random order (e.g. one binder at a time)?
4. Should I scan them and publish them as they were created, complete with errors, faded ink, and sometimes with instructors’ comments, or should I digitize them into a standard text format.
5. Do readers need to know the context for the writing or the dates when the pieces were written?
6. Would readers prefer items to be published regularly, occasionally, or rarely?
7. Should I shred them after they are published online?
8. Is this idea good, bad, or awaiting judgement?

I will appreciate your thoughts on this, even if you just tell me to get a new hobby.

#Jack #Smith, the former justice department special counsel who led the aborted federal prosecution of Donald Trump,
told a congressional committee that he never spoke to #Joe #Biden about his cases,
according to the transcript of a depositionreleased on Wednesday.

In his behind-closed-doors testimony to the House judiciary committee earlier this month,
Smith defended the charges he brought against Trump for allegedly possessing #classified #documents
and attempting to #overturn the 2020 #election,
while warning of the consequences of allowing election #meddling to go unpunished.

“Theoretically, what happens if there is election interference and the people who are responsible for that are not held accountable?”
Democratic congresswoman Pramila Jayapal asked.

🔥“It becomes the new norm,
and that becomes how we … conduct elections,”
Smith replied, according to the transcript.

“And so the toll on our democracy,
if you had to describe that, what would that be?”
the congresswoman asked.
💥“Catastrophic,” Smith said.

Trump and his Republican allies have alleged that the former special counsel was a key figure in a justice department that Biden had “weaponized” against his predecessor.
The Republican-controlled House judiciary committee earlier this year heard testimony from one of Smith’s top deputies,
and months later subpoenaed the former special counsel for private testimony.
Smith had offered to voluntarily testify in public, as special counsels typically do.

In questioning from Democratic congressman Dan Goldman,
👉Smith said he operated without interference from #Merrick #Garland, the attorney general who appointed him, or any other top justice department officials.

“Did President Biden ever give you any instructions about what you should or should not do related to these investigations?”
Goldman asked.
💥“No,” Smith replied,
later specifying he had not spoken to Biden about his cases in any way.

Smith was appointed in November 2022, and quickly brought the two federal cases against Trump, who also faced state-level charges of election interference in Georgia, and falsifying business records in New York.

While he would later be convicted of #34 #felonies in the Manhattan case,
neither of Trump’s federal indictments went to trial before he returned to office following the 2024 election,
after which Smith, in line with justice department policy, dropped the charges.

The election-interference case was slowed by pretrial motions, including a supreme court ruling that gave presidents #immunity for official acts and forced Smith to make changes to his case.

The classified-documents case was hampered by rulings from Florida judge #Aileen #Cannon, who at one point dismissed Smith’s indictment.

Smith authored a report into his prosecutions, and the portion covering the election interference case was released prior to Biden leaving office.

🆘However, Cannon has barred the chapter discussing the classified-documents charges from being made public, though Democrats on the judiciary committee have asked her to reverse her decision.

At the outset of the hearing, an attorney for Smith, Peter Koski,
told the committee the former special counsel had received an email from the justice department advising him to avoid talking about his evidence in the case because of Cannon’s ruling.

The Justice Department on Tuesday released a third batch of records related to Jeffrey Epstein, a wide array of documents that shed light on alleged co-conspirators and the late sex offender’s ties to the former Prince Andrew.

Among the records, released in accordance with the law passed by Congress last month, were several references to President Donald Trump. Trump, who was friends with Epstein for years and has said they had a falling-out because Epstein was a “creep,” has denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein.

The White House on Tuesday referred NBC News to a statement the Justice Department made earlier in the day.

“The Department of Justice has officially released nearly 30,000 more pages of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. Some of these documents contain untrue and sensationalist claims made against President Trump that were submitted to the FBI right before the 2020 election. To be clear: the claims are unfounded and false, and if they had a shred of credibility, they certainly would have been weaponized against President Trump already,” it said on X.

An NBC News review confirmed that the Justice Department released roughly 30,000 records.

Here are the top takeaways from the files.

Epstein’s plane

An email sent in January 2020 by a New York federal prosecutor who appeared to be involved with the criminal case against Epstein’s accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell alerted an unidentified person to flight logs involving Trump and Epstein from the 1990s.

“For your situational awareness, wanted to let you know that the flight records we received yesterday reflect that Donald Trump traveled on Epstein’s private jet many more times than previously has been reported (or that we were aware), including during the period we would expect to charge in a Maxwell case.”

Maxwell was indicted on federal sex trafficking charges months later, in July 2020. She is serving a 20-year prison sentence.

The email said Trump, then serving his first term as president, “is listed as a passenger on at least eight flights between 1993 and 1996, including at least four flights on which Maxwell was also present. He is listed as having traveled with, among others and at various times, Marla Maples, his daughter Tiffany, and his son Eric.”

“On one flight in 1993, he and Epstein are the only two listed passengers; on another, the only three passengers are Epstein, Trump, and then-20-year-old [redacted]. On two other flights, two of the passengers, respectively, were women who would be possible witnesses in a Maxwell case.”

The names of both the sender and the recipient were redacted. The message does not accuse Trump of any wrongdoing.

Possible co-conspirators

Another released document showed federal prosecutors discussing “10 co-conspirators” of Epstein’s in an email exchange. To date, Maxwell is the only co-conspirator to be charged. The Justice Department said in a memo in July that it did not have evidence to charge any other parties in the case.

Their identities are not revealed in the exchange. One is described as a “wealthy business man in Ohio,” while “3 have been located in FL and served [grand jury] subpoenas; 1 in Boston, 1 in NYC, and 1 in CT were located and served.”

The three others are “out of pocket,” the email said.

It’s unclear what information investigators pursued or found about the potential co-conspirators. Maxwell is the only Epstein accomplice to be charged criminally, and it’s not clear whether she’s one of the 10 people referenced.

Epstein had a history of turning some of his young victims into recruiters.

The Justice Department began releasing a huge trove of documents Friday connected to the deceased financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, partially complying with federal legislation that ordered officials to make public a collection of records long sought by his victims but entangled in political controversy.

The documents’ release,just ahead of a deadline imposed by the legislation, marks the next step of a months-long bipartisan push to force President Donald Trump and his administration to disclose more materials related to Epstein, who died in federal custody in 2019 while facing charges of sex-trafficking and abusing girls.

The documents, which Justice Department officials said would amount to several hundred thousand pages, were expected to include extensive material that is normally shielded from public view. The materials could include grand jury testimony, investigative records, immunity deals, sealed settlements and internal communications related to Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, his ex-girlfriend and accomplice, who was convicted in 2021 on sex-trafficking charges and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Already, however, the administration was coming under fire from Democrats and some Republicans for not releasing all the documents by the deadline the law mandated.

Follow Trump’s second term

Friday morning, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, the Justice Department’s No. 2 official, described the day’s planned release of documents as the first of several in the weeks to come.

Asked in an interview with Fox News about the volume of documents to be released, Blanche said: “Today, several hundred thousand. And then, over the next couple of weeks, I expect several hundred thousand more.”

Department personnel had been racing against the clock to process the files, redacting information on victims, before the Friday deadline imposed by law, he said.

“What we’re doing is we are looking at every single piece of paper that we are going to produce, making sure that every victim, their name, their identity, their story to the extent it needs to be protected is completely protected,” Blanche said.

Three federal judges ruled that the legislation requiring the release of these records, which Trump signed into law last month, overrode long-standing rules about grand jury secrecy. The judges stressed the need for officials to redact any information that could violate the privacy of Epstein’s victims.
