Quando l'Open Social Web si ibrida: Raccoon for Friendica è una nuova app... Mastodon. E contiene anche un po' di Lemmy! Ecco perché la coppia Free Software + Fediverso è una risorsa preziosa

Nei giorni scorsi è stata finalmente pubblicata la release 1.0 di #Raccoon per Android, un client piuttosto innovativo nato per #Friendica, ma diventato oggi una delle app più innovative per l'esperienza utente su #Mastodon. L'app è disponibile per Android (la release 1.0 è già sul PlayStore e su Izzidroid e a breve sarà anche su F-Droid), ma ora è stato rilasciato anche un pacchetto #Debian, mentre per una versione iOS bisognerà capire quale sarà il successo tra il pubblico.

L'app introduce alcune novità molto importanti nel panorama delle app federate. Vediamole insieme:

1. Il Fediverso anche senza un account

Raccoon è l'unica app che consente di navigare il Fediverso anche senza avere un account. Infatti, quando la si installa è possibile selezionare una qualsiasi istanza Friendica o Mastodon e "appoggiarsi" sulla sua timeline locale pubblica e su quella federata. In questo modo gli utenti potranno esplorare diverse istanze prima di scegliere su quale aprire un account. Naturalmente, anche dopo aver aggiunto un account (l'app gestisce più account), sarà possibile esplorare le timeline dei server diversi da quello cui ci si è iscritti

2. La navigazione "swipe"

A differenza di tutte le altre app social (sia di quelle per i social del Fediverso, sia di quelle dei social commerciali), #RaccoonForFriendica consente di aprire uno dei post della timeline e di proseguire la navigazione dei post precedenti e successivi, solo sfogliandolo a destra e a sinistra.
Si tratta di una novità ergonomica davvero interessante

3. La barra di formattazione

Siccome l'app nasce per Friendica, dispone di una barra di formattazione integrata che ricorda i client Lemmy (infatti lo svilupatore si è cimentato per la prima volta con lo sviluppo di app con un'app Lemmy). La barra di formattazione può essere utilizzata anche per le istanze Mastodon che eseguono il fork Glitch-soc, come la mia istanza poliversity.it che è stata quella con cui lo sviluppatore @𝔻𝕚𝕖𝕘𝕠 🦝🧑🏻‍💻🍕 ha fatto diversi esperimenti.
Oltre che essere più immediata, la scrittura di post formattati è agevolata anche da una funzione di "anteprima" che aiuta a evitare errori nella codifica del Markdown o del BBCode.

4. Finalmente anche gli utenti Mastodon potranno godersi i gruppi del Fediverso

Come forse saprete, Mastodon non aiuta la visualizzazione dei post dei gruppi. Anche selezionando un gruppo, continueremo a vedere una timeline unica in cui i post principali si alterneranno con le risposte. Cercare un thread su Mastodon è quindi molto complicato, ma lo svilupatore di Raccoon ha trovato un modo per consentire una visualizzazione per "topic" su tutti gli account che risultano essere "gruppi activitypub", siano essi gruppi #Lemmy, #NodeBB, Piefed, Mbin, Peertube, #Wordpress, Mobilizon, #Flipboard, etc.
Anche questa trovata è nata grazie al fatto che lo sviluppatore si è cimentato in passato con lo svluppo di un'app per Lemmy e ha potuto misurarsi con le barre di formattazione e la visualizzazione delle "comunità" Lemmy, che altro non sono che "gruppi #Activitypub"

5. Altre funzionalità interessanti

Tra le altre cose, c'è la possibilità di
- visualizzare il codice HTML dei messaggi;
- inviare post schedulati;
- configurare completamente l'interfaccia;
- supportare la scrittura in HTML, utile sia per Mastodon Glitch-soc, sia per scrivere post Wordpress integrando il plugin Activitypub for Wordpress di @Matthias Pfefferle e il plugin "Enable Mastodon App" di @Alex Kirk
- integrare librerie di traduzione

6. Cosa manca ancora?

L'app presenta tutte le funzionalità presenti nella maggior parte delle altre app Mastodon, tranne una: la corretta gestione dei post Mastodon che citano altri post. Questi, infatti, vengono visualizzati ancora in maniera abbastanza primitiva. Lo sviluppatore sta cercando di capire se adeguarsi alle specifiche Mastodon oppure reinterpretare la funzionalità in maniera più personalizzata.
C'è da dire infatti che, purtroppo, l'implementazione dei messaggi con citazione (già presente da secoli in Friendica) è stata implementata da Mastodon molto tardivamente solo negli ultimi mesi e in un modo molto "personale" che non è piaciuto a molti degli sviluppatori di altri software.

7. Un'app che farà bene agli utenti che già usano Mastodon ma anche a chi non ha mai "provato" il Fediverso

Lo sviluppo di questa app procede da quasi due anni e la versione beta ha poco più di un anno di vita, ma con la versione 1.0 sono stati risolti tutti i problemi incontrati precedentemente.
In base a quello che sarà il riscontro da parte degli utilizzatori, lo sviluppatore valuterà se creare una versione iOS e addirittura una versione Windows.
Chi vuole consentire l'invio di segnalazioni in caso di errore dell'applicazione potrà abilitare i report anonimi sui crash.

Last week’s demolition of The Washington Post newsroom is just another sad sentence in the obituary of traditional media. At Flipboard, we’ve watched with alarm as thousands of journalists have been laid off in the past few years and some publications have shuttered entirely. What’s to be done?

We’re doing everything we can to support publishers that produce real journalism — original, fact-based and quality reporting — just as we have for the past 15 years. Especially important now are independent media outlets and the journalists who’ve struck out on their own, impressing us with their entrepreneurial spirit. It’s challenging for one person or small publications to find audiences, particularly in a media ecosystem disrupted by political polarization, AI and “Google Zero.”

We love independent media and want to help. To start, we’ve recently onboarded dozens of new publishers, introducing many of them to Flipboard users for the first time. Here are just a few:

• AfroLA, solutions-based journalism about Los Angeles
• Aftermath, a worker-owned site covering video games and the internet
• All Rise News, “accountability journalism” for the Trump era
• The Ankler, covering the entertainment industry

We haven’t just added these sites to Flipboard; we’ve taken steps to ensure their content is actually seen. Most of these publications publish far fewer articles than big corporate media so it’s easy for them to get drowned out. Our algorithm team works to give these smaller platforms a chance to surface, while our human editors spotlight their stories in our Daily Edition, elsewhere in the app, and our email newsletters.

“Becoming a Flipboard publisher gave us an immediate and noticeable boost, helping us amplify our original reporting and accessing an audience we hadn’t previously reached,” says Dianna Heitz, director of audience and platforms at NOTUS.

“Flipboard has been a terrific resource,” says Noble Ingram, audience engagement editor for Bolts. “Its editors have helped ensure that our election guides and local politics coverage reach a wide audience that’s hungry for our brand of independent journalism. They’ve consistently helped to amplify our work and I’m grateful for their partnership.”

Beyond the publications we’ve officially onboarded, we ingest hundreds of RSS feeds for small, high-quality sites that our team discovers. Examples include The Coalition For Women In Journalism, Court Watch (covering federal filings), Design Room (videogame coverage), The Flytrap (feminist perspective), Letters From an American (Heather Cox Richardon’s Substack), More Perfect Union (working class views), and the Trans News Network. We suspect many of these names will be new to you and we encourage you to check them out. Or maybe you’ll find them in the relevant Flipboard topics you follow.

And we’ll continue to elevate long-standing nonprofit and independent newsrooms such as The Conversation, FactCheck.org, The Marshall Project, The 19th, and ProPublica.

As I wrote a year ago, “At Flipboard, we still believe in the value of facts, journalism and open discourse.” Our work on behalf of indy media is a key part of the equation. Show them some love by reading, subscribing, and sharing. It can be our collective Valentine’s Day gift to society.

Of course, an algorithm can’t tell the difference between the truth and a lie, so we add the next layer with human data scientists and editors. When we spot bad actors, we take various actions to remove their content.

This exposes real journalism to readers via our Daily Edition news roundup, email newsletters, and push notifications.

These editorial choices also influence the blended algorithm that powers the popular “For You” feed. Our editorial team, all trained journalists with years of experience at trusted media organizations big and small, reads hundreds of stories every day to find the most accurate, balanced and truthful content. In an algorithm-driven world, we will never stop believing in the value of human news judgment.

In 2021, Flipboard’s founder, Mike McCue, shared this statement with The Drum’s John McCarthy: “Those spouting lies and hate should not be magnified by algorithms.” McCue spoke to Flipboard’s commitment to amplifying quality sources and how “algorithms and tech need to be balanced with judgement and principles.”

What is our stance on moderation?

We enforce our community guidelines. Our mission is to foster a safe and inclusive platform for all people by prohibiting hateful, threatening, disrespectful, or harmful content, including anything that attacks, marginalizes, or dehumanizes individuals or groups — period.
