Looking at a newspaper article about low emission zones, their benefits and the inexplicable reluctance of some cities to make use o them I was struck by this photograph. I have to say my first thought was that some sign writer was attempting to make it clear in mangled French for visitors to London. Who on earth are ‘Lez Ulez’ - bad heavy metal band or a famous standup comedian? 🤔🙄

Here’s a view of Mount Rainier today from the Sunrise Visitor Center in Mount Rainier National Park. This camera is a seasonal camera (typically offline from late fall to late spring, depending on the weather). A lot of park visitors see Mount Rainier from Paradise (thus looking nearly due north to the mountain), while this camera is located at Sunrise and so it provides a view of Mount Rainier from the east/northeast. Sunrise is a wonderful place for walking! This image looks upslope through a group of green trees towards a still snow-covered mountain. The trees are conifers, tall and narrow in shape (foreground and lower half of the image). The mountain fills the center of the image. The mountain is generally white with snow, though some parts appear grey, either from shadows or as the result of the snow having melted to fill the seemingly countless watercourses that are found on the slopes of Mount Rainier. The sky is mostly clear and blue with a few clouds drifting in from the left just above the mountain.

The beauty of Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park, thanks to the park staff and park supporters who keep these cameras operating! This image, from Monday morning, shows off early morning conditions on the lake: clear enough to see the rocks on the lake bottom and calm enough to show reflections of the colorful boats. In the foreground, two paddlers in a red and green vessel. To the left, a dock lined with silver and red boats. Green forested slopes can be seen on the left and right of the lake and a collection of distant mountains appears directly in the center. Above it all, a blue sky with white clouds forming on the horizon. There is indeed a hint of snow on the mountains, just below the clouds.
On the other side of the Continental Divide, the camera at Two Medicine (elevation 5194 feet / 1583 meters) is up and running again. This view shows off a large swath of brilliant blue sky, which fills the upper two-thirds of the image. A few very small white clouds can just be seen, as can the setting moon (directly above the peak in the middle). Below and in the foreground, a forest of (primarily) green trees, bright green slopes, a tiny sliver of a blue lake (most likely Two Medicine Lake), and several prominent deep brown colored mountains. The mountains have patches of snow here and there. The lake is wonderfully bright upon closer inspection! Melting snow helps to power the flow of Yosemite Falls in this view from Yosemite National Park this morning. Of note is the blooming tree just below and to the left of the fall. Sky color and sun angle play an important part in the creation of an image. This view of Yosemite Falls is from yesterday. In it, the blooming tree just below and to the left of the fall stands out more clearly from the surrounding scenery than in the previous view in this post. The tree appears to be a Pacific dogwood, which generally blooms in springtime (April, May). Here’s a quote regarding the Pacific dogwood from Robert W. Crippin (1960): “Flowers of the Pacific dogwood are unusual! The big, white ‘petals’ are in reality bracts. True dogwood flowers are actually crowded into a dense button in the center of these petal-like structures.” Source: NPS Yosemite Nature Notes. The tree and waterfall fill the center field of this image, surrounded by grey rock walls on the left and bright green conifers on the right. The sky above is generally grey. In the previous view, the blue sky is a welcome site, even if the play of sun and shadow tends to make the beauty of the creamy white dogwood bracts a bit more understated.
