#Maine will be the 1st eastern state and 6th in the nation to cover #Indigenous healing methods through Medicaid.

Excerpt: "Over the next year, leaders from healthcare providers will work with state Medicaid officials to determine exactly what practices will be covered by Medicaid, and how much clinics will be reimbursed for them.

"Tribal #knowledgekeepers have continued to use ceremonies to heal members of their communities even without a mechanism of government financial support, leaders emphasize. And they always will. Although there’s never a charge for those ceremonies, they do consume resources.

" 'Rather than having them adapt their cultural practices to our systems, we need to adapt our systems to their cultural practices,' Pladsen said.

"It is an odd moment, #LisaSockabasin acknowledged, in which traditional practices that are typically shared relationally within communities are to be assigned a dollar value.

"But it’s also an opportunity for collaboration and for mutual growth, she said.

"Architect #JuliaWatson has followed up her seminal book #LoTEK with a new volume focused specifically on Indigenous approaches to extreme water scenarios. Here, she shares an exclusive preview of eight examples from #FloatingFarms to #SpongeParks.

"With the first Lo-TEK book, subtitled Design by #RadicalIndigenism , Watson introduced readers, many for the first time, to the idea of TEK, or traditional ecological knowledge.

"These are #building, #landscaping and #farming practices that belong to the world's Indigenous communities and hold great lessons for Western practitioners trying to design for #ClimateResilience.

"With #LoTEKWater, the Australian architect wanted to take a deep dive into water as the element linking four different climate-related disasters: #droughts, #flooding, #SeaLevelRise and #ExtremeStorms.

"The book also puts more of a focus on instances where TEK and contemporary #UrbanDesign are already working together.

" 'Through the lens of water, I wanted to understand the potential of hybridisation and co-design,' Watson told #Dezeen.
