Gavin Hamilton (1723–1798), “The Abdication of Mary, Queen of Scots” Oil on canvas The Hunterian, University of Glasgow A very nearly square (175.3 cm high x 160.4 cm wide) oil painting showing the abdication of Mary, Queen of Scots, on 24 July 1567. Mary stands on the right, wearing an ornate silver-blue dress with a wide ruff collar. She is placing her royal crown onto a table. Behind the table, on the left, is a man in full armour. He points at something on a large scroll on the tabletop and reaches out with his other hand to tug at Mary's right sleeve. Behind him stands a bearded man in a rough grey cloak, holding a large spear. To the left, a younger bearded man sits, holding a board on his knees and writing. Behind Mary is another figure, possibly female, its head covered by a cloak and its face covered by one hand. It reaches its other hand under Mary's left arm, to support her. A window made up of little circular lunettes on the left-hand wall illuminates the scene.

A famous #StainedGlass window, at #StGilesCathedral in #Edinburgh.

The window tells the story of the 1570 assassination of the Earl of Moray, who had the ignoble honor of being the first politician to be assassinated by a gun.

The top panel shows him getting shot by James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh (a man who was angry that his family had been evicted from their home by Moray). Hamilton later escaped safely to France, and members of Moray's political enemies (kin to #MaryQueenOfScots ) were tried and convicted of taking part in the conspiracy.

The bottom panel shows his funeral, officiated by Rev. John Knox (who made an exception to his Protestant Reformationist beliefs in order to speak at the funeral).

The top panel of the stained glass window of St. Giles. This depicts the Earl of Moray (in Knight's armour and a blue cape-cloak) being shot by a wide-barrelled gun (left). The crowd is shocked and afraid, many are looking up towards the killer, who is in a nearby balcony.
The bottom panel of the stained glass window. It depicts the Earl of Moray's funeral, with Reformationist Minister John Moore in a balcony (to the right), speaking to the crowd. The crowd is composed of a large number of well-dressed noble men (there are no women) packed tightly in the room. All are standing, except a scant few men in the front of the images, who are kneeling and weeping with grief.
