Had an idea based on space combat discussions from earlier. Players who play rpgs, may not want to play some tactical war game with chits and a battlemap. What if ship to ship combat was just a mini game? You could spice it up by providing a ship schematic and hit locations, but the players would not be moving little ship counters on a map.
Maybe you could abstract away the movement and positioning by just doing some kind of rock paper scissors like chart.
All Out Attack
Attack
Lay Trap
Defense
Withdraw
Both players pick one of the above and then you make a cross reference chart of bonus and minuses... An "All Out Attack" would be penalized against a "Lay Trap". That sort of thing.
