Why does the W3C - or any standards body worth its salt - still allow important standardisation work to be done on GritHub, and other platforms owned by vendors?

Surely a well-funded organisation, whose mission is to be vendor-neutral, ought to be standing up its own code forge and other project management tools people doing standards work need? Depending on the rapidly enshittifying platforms owned by W3C vendor-members seems unwise. Especially BorgSoft, given their history.

The #W3C is working on end-to-end encryption #E2EE for #ActivityPub, with three main goals: enabling #encryptedmessages with attachments, ensuring #correctencryption, and verifying #usercontrol of signing keys. The Fundamental Goal is being addressed by the SWICG’s ActivityPub E2EE project team, while the Security Goal requires client software to authenticate KeyPackages. soatok.blog/2026/07/15/the-lon… #Fedizen #Fediverse #ActivityPub #News

Preparing a new Loops release, possibly related to my upcoming FediCon talk!

I can't stop smiling. 😁

Dear @w3c @timbl
"we need to re-decentralise the #internet" - old but gold. Sad to see #w3c isn't confident showing #video and enabling community on the media it invented. I think you don't need my advice on how to do so.

Just back from my very first @w3c @tag Face-to-Face in London, and it was so cool!

🌐 It was a packed week covering many topics, including the health of the #web, the impact of #AI, the global download of AI models as an architectural concept, age verification, and more.

🤝 The freshly formed #TAG worked really well together, and I’m excited to help shape the future of the web.

🎉 Thanks to Google for hosting us, and Samsung for hosting the developer meetup.

@evan some time ago you queried about what would be a good comms channel for #ActivityPub API.

I have some ideas / recommendations on the #Github repo that the #W3C TF uses.

- Structure the repo to hold the work of the full task force, not just for the creation of a single specification document.

- Use GH Discussions for all the general elaboration, feedback collection, etc. The repo forms a self-contained body of work. Move most current Issues in the tracker to become Discussions.

- Issues are created by task force members, and always represent actionable items. They are tracked on a Project kanban board where the swimlanes represent a simple protocol development #Process with a number of stages.

Then:

- Primary comms channel is Discussions.
- Issues + kanban represent work tracks.
- Secondary comms channel can be #fedi.

I'd reserve #SocialCG mailing list to #governance and organizational matters concerning the CG itself, and point mails on other subject to appropriate channel.

In #Google #Chrome, it is possible to apply self-alignment attributes such as align-self, justify-self, and place-self to the grid container within a block element. According to the official specification, this should not be possible. #Firefox is more precise in this case, so it is only possible to align an element (grid subelement) within a grid container itself.

Big news for Mastodon GmbH. They have formally joined forces with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

If you’re not in the design/tech world, trust me when I say this is a big step for the fediverse. The W3C establishes the standards used for the internet.

This is a solid path forward for small tech.

ActivityPub, the protocol that powers much of the fediverse and allows the various fediverse platforms and servers to talk to each other, has become an official W3C standard 8 years ago!
