Obama and Clinton are preaching to the choir, but George Bush not attending the traditional inaugural lunch is a real statement. Too bad he didn't have the courage to actually speak out against Trump publicly when it mattered most. Or, y'know, EVER. #clinton #bush #obama #trump #uspoli #potus #usa

After major 2024 defeats, the Democratic Party searches for a new direction

The Democratic Party begins 2025 with several looming questions. Among them: who will lead its national party apparatus, and how it will handle President-elect Donald Trump's second term.

I might suggest a vast reduction in identity politics - that usually just incites the opposition voters who are not of that identity.

Also, the D's need to get more forceful - no more of this taking a song to a gunfight. I rather thought the following opinion piece to be spot on:

Private firefighters are helping out in L.A. wildfires. It raises ethical questions

Insurers are deploying private firefighters amid the Los Angeles wildfires. Are they an added bonus for all — or only for those who can afford them?

At least by the hour. I'm sure the benefits will be lacking. They'll probably be hired as "contractors".

It is kind of an axiom in computer science that it is better to have a single pool of a resource rather than several pools. (With several pools there can be situations where one pool runs out and others have unused capacity.)

Same with firefighting - the private groups (which I consider the equivalent of private jets) will tend to mean that if nobody is paying (as would be the case of a fire in a non-wealthy area) that firefighting resources go unused.

I do see, however, some benefits of private firefighters with regard to the pre-fire inspection and hardening. But I don't see why that needs big fire gear - just people who you can hire to come out and take a look and initiate repairs. We had an insurance company that sent out a former fire fighter who made sure our eve vents had spark/cinder screens and that our trees were adequately pruned away from the house, etc.

I ran this yesterday to solve a CTF. It should have been called a WTF.
xxd -r data.txt | gzip -cd | bzip2 -cd | gzip -cd | tar x -O | tar x -O | bzip2 -cd | tar x -O | gzip -cd

@paguro I was decompressing. It was a CTF that had many layers of different compressions and archiving that had to be delayered.

"Stories from the Internet"

A collection of internet folklore.

<- I only knew 3 or 4 of these, but they are superb.

This exchange doesn't bode well...
I'm worried about the longevity of those very awesome (in principle) projects :/

Let me preface: I really am in awe of all your incredible work. Pixelfed is great, loops has potential (just not for me personally ^^).

But there are substantiated criticisms of decisions you made which could have been avoided if you had been part of a team.
Please understand: I'm worried for your personal well-being and the longevity of your projects.

Are there any plans to share those burdens? Kinda like @Gargron just did?
(ofc not exactly the same, your situations are different)

#LinuxMint )
