This needs some #AltTxt and not only for those who need visual support. Who are all these people (besides scarjo)?

It's fitting that one of the biggest faces representing "influence" in AI is of someone who didn't want to be there and was dragged into it against her will.

The realtime preemption end game — for real this time [LWN.net]

Work on realtime preemption for the Linux kernel got its start almost exactly 20 years ago (though it had its roots in earlier work, of course). It is fair to say that finishing that job has taken a bit longer than anybody involved would have expected. Now, though, Sebastian Andrzej Siewior has posted a brief patch series making it possible to enable realtime preemption in the mainline kernel on three architectures.

After going through a rabbit hole what I learned that this patch does is to allow time critical applications at top priority.

Most of popular linux distributions already have this patch applied in one form or another.

What I think it means for end user is that if applications use this part of linux kernel correctly, then they can speed up some core parts, be more responsive, and stable. But if it's abused, it can end up slowing the whole system.

We took a look at some of the far-right individuals involved in running Heartbeat of Miami, a 'fake clinic' that works to try to prevent people from accessing abortion care.

in reply to Unicorn Riot

The primary purpose of Heartbeat International's so-called "Pregnancy Help Centers" is to dissuade visitors from getting an abortion, no matter the consequences - even if the baby dies shortly after childbirth.

Meet the right-wing Canadian influencers accused of collaborating with an alleged Russian propaganda scheme

On Thursday, Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc said the government was working with the U.S. "on this serious matter."

"Any Canadians who illegally assist in Russia's persistent attempts to use disinformation, criminal and covert activities, and corruption to undermine our sovereignty and democratic processes will face the full force of Canadian law," he said in a statement.

Intelligence experts say the details in the indictment were a further indication of the scope of Russian efforts to influence the American election.

That's what the Nazis were, they had huge programmes of state funded projects.

Too bad now people are too afraid of being called "populists" to suggest investing in infrastructure or social programs that don't generate profit for some multinational megacorp.

Blog post: NY Times publisher's warns of threat to press freedom, but misses the bigger threat -- to democracy. And he continues to insist that his news organization won't take a stand on that.

This just infuriated me: “It is beyond shortsighted to give up journalistic independence out of fear that it might later be taken away”

He just doesn’t get it. The shortsightedness is not recognizing that this is truly an extinction level event for those of us who do not have chauffeurs and private planes.

Winged Escape

This is a male, red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) departing a bird feeder with a peanut.

"Red-bellied Woodpeckers are pale, medium-sized woodpeckers common in forests of the East. Their strikingly barred backs and gleaming red caps make them an unforgettable sight – just resist the temptation to call them Red-headed Woodpeckers, a somewhat rarer species that's mostly black on the back with big white wing patches. Learn the Red-bellied's rolling call and you’ll notice these birds everywhere." - allaboutbirds.org

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

Gorgeous photo. We usually have these birds at our suet feeder, but they must be enjoying bugs in the wild. They’ll be back. I hope H5N1 hasn’t affected their populations.

@Bioalchemy13

Thanks! They'll be back, I'm sure. The red-bellies are regular visitors to my backyard, but they go for the seeds particularly peanuts. They don't normally hit the suet feeder.
