Good evening Squirrel Fans.

I often mention wandering around in L-Space, I feel that I should underline the fact that I stick to the following rules closely when I do so!

“The three rules of the Librarians of Time and Space are: 1) Silence; 2) Books must be returned no later than the last date shown; and 3) Do not interfere with the nature of causality.”
― Terry Pratchett, Guards! Guards!

Where ever you are in your day I hope you’re enjoying it! 😊🫶🐿️🖖

I'm with you that it'd be wonderful if there were more actually new things with the new hardware. At best there's stuff like the thermal IR sensor on the fanciest Pixels or foldables, but those aren't game changers.

That said, on-device ML stuff that processes your data locally is getting better and more powerful, which is enabling a bunch of new functionality (translation, live captioning, image content analysis for search). I'm hoping the end game is largely offline, device-local ML.

My new phone (arriving soon) is smaller than my old phone. I am very happy and excited about this. Both phones have a very long battery life and can be dropped into and onto almost anything and survive. My main issue is the lack of continued software support. (Hence the new phone.)
I would probably be happy keeping my new phone for a very long time, if the software stayed up to date. #AI and #LLMs played no role in the decision, because indeed, no relevant innovation has happend.

If you run your own matrix server and use matrix-registration to create invitation links for your friends, maybe you are lazy like me.

Instead of using the command line I was searching for a more convenient way of creating these links. I wrote a small python script for a matrix bot, put it into a container and there it is!

Simple, early, kind of beta, still small problems.

Making Open Source More Secure

Earlier this year, a Microsoft developer realized that someone had inserted a backdoor into the open source utility XZ Utils, which is used in virtually every Linux OS.

The operation had started 2 years earlier when, a person nicknamed JiaT75, started contributing to the XZ Utils repository on GitHub. A cybersecurity expert called this attack a “nightmare scenario” & “the best executed supply chain attack we’ve seen.”
