Elderly laptop, that I mostly keep on a shelf, has been working well with Debian for years.

Yesterday I booted it up, and as soon as it connected to wi-fi, the screen went dark.

Booting up with older kernels, going back to 4.x even, same problem.

Tried a live USB of KDE Neon. Worked great... until I connected to the wi-fi. At which point, the screen went dark.

Laptop still works with Windows 10 absolutely fine. Wi-fi, video drivers, everything.

How could this happen? How could it magically go from working to not-working, just sitting on a shelf, no software updates?

It's very much as if the hardware itself has decayed in some way that Windows is more tolerant of. I've never heard of such a thing. The mind boggles. Topsy-turvydom.

I shouldn't even be thinking about this. This is very much me procrastinating Christmas preparations.

Latest comic: How to get in the holiday spirit

I don't actually recommend slipping into unconsciousness for the next twelve years! Personally, I'm reading and trying to get around to that pie.

I love this quote by Frankl. “Freedom, however, is not the last word. Freedom is only part of the story and half of the truth. Freedom is but the negative aspect of the whole phenomenon whose positive aspect is responsibleness. In fact, freedom is in danger of degenerating into mere arbitrariness unless it is lived in terms of responsibleness. That is why I recommend that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast.”

Sunday reading: The Modern Conservative Tradition and the Origins of Trumpism

I wrote about how to situate the radicalism that defines today’s Right in the history of Modern Conservatism - which helps explain why Trumpism came to dominate rightwing politics and identity so easily.

This week’s piece:

in reply to Thomas Zimmer

If we take Modern Conservatism seriously on its own terms, we should not be all that surprised by the radicalizing dynamic that has ultimately led to the Trumpist Right’s triumph. That outcome was never determined – but it also doesn’t constitute a betrayal of the Movement’s “true” tradition. 11/
in reply to Thomas Zimmer

Today’s Trumpist radicals are not (small-c) conservatives – but they stand in the continuity of Modern Conservatism’s defining political project.
