Without authority, without compulsion, without reward and punishment, how do we understand what order is, and willingly cooperate to bring about that order? Without compulsion, without any form of threat, reward, that whole cycle, how would you do it? What does order mean, or discipline? What would you say order is? The word ā€˜discipline’ has its root meaning in disciple, one who is willing to learn. The idea of discipline is the act of learning, not complying, not imitating, not conforming, not subjugating, but the movement of learning all the time. That brings about its own order. That is the original Latin meaning of the word ā€˜discipline’. How would we help to bring about order, if you think order is necessary? What is order? Order and discipline basically mean the same thing. One cannot learn if there is no order, which means leisure, and willingness to cooperate in the act of learning.
