!Friendica Admins I know there have been discussions about a chat on github, but I do not see those updated in years. A chat (one to one), would be super great. DMs are great but that0s similar to email. Can't you make DMs load dynamically to give the impression of a chat? Or are the messages sent too slow to make that look like a chat?

IDK am thinking a chat is what is missing from Friendica, but I guess it is very hard to implement that. Just wanted to check with you guys.

Sounds cool. Can you provide some links for me about setting up and XMPP server that connects with Friendica? SOrry if it is in the documentation but could not find it.

@Tio Yes a chat like instant messenger is missing, that would give Friendica a good boost.

Can't the DM function like a chat somehow? To simply make it faster and load like a chat?

I see. But in theory the DM that is currently in Friendica could work like a chat right? So no need to implement XMPP or something else. The DM works very well, is just that it doesn't feel like a chat.

How would XMPP work? If say I want to chat with one of my friends, I can do that without having my friend add me to his xmpp contact list? Am curious about how easy would be for users to use it. Should be as easy as open chat and talk to any of your friends from the fediverse, right? Without setting up anything else on any side.

@Ingo Jürgensmann the problem is that users want to operate everything via one interface. The more interfaces, the less interesting the service becomes.

Sure if you want to chat you can use other chat clients, but that's besides the point right? :D Because we are talking about Friendica allowing that feature to make it much easier for users to stay in touch with each other. Facebook has that, Twitter too. It is very handy. Twitter has a Messages section but that works like a chat as it is very fast. I'd love if Friendica had that, but @Michael Vogel said the database for it is not structured to allow for such a thing.... This is not a big deal but would be fantastic to have a chat on Friendica.
