Anyone knows an open source ebook reader? Probably open source hardware but also software. At least software....so you don't get the bloated and locked amazon BS...

koreader.rocks/ is really great. i currently use it only on android* / desktop, but plan on getting a kobo to install it on for the summer

(* i have a 7" eink android reader. it's slow as heck but works)

hmm...so you can install this on a kindle for example and use this instead of the kindle software?
in reply to Tio

yesish, i think it's on top of the kindle software like an app. but the kindle needs to be on a specific firmware, jailbroken etc. it's a lot easier on a kobo, according to the docs at least

Interesting and wow so expensive. Thanks. But it doesn't come pre-installed with an Open Source OS correct?

Ah this one seems promising. But prob better wait longer:

NOTICE: The PineNote is an experimental device. PineNote software is still in it’s infancy and therefore it is ONLY suitable for experienced developers. At present time, there is no default OS for the PineNote.

It is not ready for regular user and users. Thanks!

I heard about PocketBook Touch HD 3. At least there is no need to register anywhere and you also don't need to use the manufacturer's cloud connestion. But I don't know much more.

I have an android tablet and I use this app on it for reading your books :) So if you end up having to use android then I recommend this app.

On my old Kobo Reader (Kobo is already better than Kindle, because it uses epub format, I was easily able to install FOSS software on top of the default Kobo system, such that I never saw it. I haven't tried on the current one, because I haven't been bothered as much by the Kobo system. It may have been koreader that I used - See libhunt.com/topic/kobo. For transfering books to the Kobo I use Calibre. Many books can be found on pirate bay. For living authors I usually buy in parallel a paper version of the book to give away to friends. I noticed that there was a lecture on foss ereaders now in the LibrePlanet conference - I will wait to see if they release the recording.

Thanks. Now at least I know about Kobo. How did you install FOSS on Kobo?

I forgot to mention that, although I have a kobo reader, for the last few months I have found myself reading more on my phone, where I use Librera Pro, from FDroid.
