Surprising to see Youtuber PewDiePie (110M subscribers) publishing a video last night , "I installed Linux (so should you)" with a call to his community to join the platform, underlining the fun of customisation and DIY, in opposition to all the enshitification of Windows. His main point of friction for moving was Photoshop, and he explained how he made the effort to adapt GIMP to his needs. Always good to see initiatives like that shared to large audience.

Getting new people to Linux is good but pewdiepie is well known to have a part of his community being fascists, so that also means more fascists to come to the Linux world. Be careful on forums.
in reply to Loy Hena

@loyhena Thank you for the information.

I thought about this eventuality and I thought I was cautious by visiting en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PewDiePi… before posting, but quickly haven't found any "controversial" chapter and after quickly browsing, I thought the guy was more or less ok. My error. I probably should have read all the long page ( now I see it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PewDiePi… ). A proof I don't know really the influencer except of being a "famous video game YouTuber". My bad!

in reply to David Revoy

No worries :) I should know because I used to be part of his community before, but i know its not common knowledge which is why I take the time to warn about it !
in reply to David Revoy

wow, I'm completely mind blown. He has an actually beautiful setup there and explains everything correctly.
in reply to Marika

@hermlon Yes, not just a video of "wow, I ran a Live ISO of Mint, and it's cool." but a video of someone who put hands in Hyprland customisation on Arch, and took time to already adapt his needs.
in reply to David Revoy

omfg, ofc it's hyprland - known for the main dev being such a notorious bigot that he got banned from freedesktop.org gitlab
in reply to Alice

@alice @hermlon Ok, I just read that drewdevault.com/2023/09/17/Hyp… , and it can't be just a coincidence that among all the whole variety of DE/compositor he did choose to highlight a project like that ... 😔
in reply to David Revoy

I'd recommend just removing the video link from the first post if you now know he's <adjectives not to be said in polite company> :bugcat_nod:
in reply to Octavia Con Amore Succubard's Library

@OctaviaConAmore Thank you for the suggestion.

Yes, I thought about that. But then I thought maybe it's better to keep the video link to reference what we are talking about in this thread.

My reply under directly will be also federated wherever this post goes, so the complement of info will be available and around too.

in reply to Octavia Con Amore Succubard's Library

@OctaviaConAmore Not for this one: if you copy it on a text editor you'll see that I'm exactly maximizing the character count allowed by my server. Too bad for me, yes a nice "edit:" with the links and all would have been the most elegant way to adjust the post. I agree.
in reply to David Revoy

just my two cents, pewdiepie has changed alot since then and so has his fanbase. i'm sure him promoting linux will bring some heinous people into the community, just like any other time any community gets an influx of new people. that's just a fact of life.
in reply to David Revoy

I think it's done in bad faith that 6 years after the incidents which Felix has properly addressed and condemned, that people are still trying to portray him as a bad person (unless something happened recently).

bad apples exist everywhere, but I don't see how Felix is now responsible for it. he has changed.

"It does not of necessity follow that, if the work delights you with its grace,
the one who wrought it is worthy of your esteem." (Plutarch)

People do bad things and good things. This is a good thing, whatever this person did in the past, and you were right to say so.

in reply to David Revoy

Does the quality of the message of this particular video quoted depend on the moral conduct of the person enunciating it?
If so, very few people could say good things. Could we therefore infer from the criticism of Stallman that his message is false, or immoral, or do we not accept his fans?
Yet the GPL says precisely that you are free, even to use Linux to drive a bomb (...already done) or to advertise fascism (... already done).
Not that I agree with it, at all.
in reply to Rickyx

@rickyx I understand, but it is an easy dilemma and all come down to: "should we praise the good actions of someone who did shitty stuff in the past (or continue to do it)."

I'm on the team of 'yes', especially if the action has impact, well done, and I think this is one path to escape a polarisation/manichaeism effect. But still! Acknowledging and informing about what this person did for context, and sharing about it is also important. My first post was incomplete in this regard.

Been using #Gimp for (I want to say 10 years)...

...the only showstopper would be if you rely on all the custom filters and add-ons you may use professionally.

For most mortals, gimp is perfect.

#gimp

There are some applications that are rather tricky to get workign on a Linux platform. The technos will know how to do it but the ordinary punters like me just do without.

But - what I really like is being translated into the open source commons and all the other things that work on the basis of shared rather than locked-down knowledge.

Yes, I successfully installed a Linux distribution this week on an old 2009 MacBook Pro and gave it new life. Perfect technology to keep older machines very useful. Runs very well.

I will install on my newer MacBook Pro as well.

in reply to David Revoy

Oh goody. Finally someone who speaks up for fascists is interested in Linux.

Hooray. What a huge win.

in reply to troy_friz_zell

@troy_frizzell 😅 To be fair, I had no idea about who was PDP and what type of audience he seduced in the past when I posted this. I quickly 'revised my copy' and added a reply to my post a couple of minutes after the rain of info about him.

Well, let's hope this entry in the Linux world about the most rotten part of his audience will open for them a world of wonder, with showing them basic mechanism of 'living well together' like observing a code of conduct, cooperating, and sharing. 😆

in reply to David Revoy

I’ve made it this long without viewing any “PewDiePie” content and I’m not about to start now.
in reply to Thomas P. Moonis

@MisterMoo 😆 haha, same. I probably only saw once a Flappy Bird video of him. Decade ago. I knew only the name, video-game influencer, and the huge audience.
This one did pop out of my recommendation, probably because I'm consuming a lot of Linux related content.
in reply to Grymt

I didn't (nor I knew anything about PDP), but I was quickly informed. I added a reply a couple of minutes after I posted the link under the post. Thanks for the info.

in reply to David Revoy

Certainly not a fan of him... But, I think it's great to have someone with such a voice saying, "Windows sucks, try Linux".
in reply to Jigme Datse

Yes, I had no idea of who the character was and I never followed his content. Maybe I once saw something from the era of Flappy Bird, but that was probably more than 10 years ago.
Got this one in my recommendation probably because I'm searching often the keyword Linux.
I checked the video again this morning, 3 Millions view. Even if only 1% joins his call to action, that's suddenly 30K new GNU/Linux user. Impressive audience.

@hellpie It sounds like a frustrating situation for many users. Hopefully at one point, a community with technical abilities will be able to (soft) fork the project into a place with a better moderated CoC and healthy community.
in reply to David Revoy

I feel like we're on the verge of a linguistic phenomena where the worst interpretation of "gimp" becomes less prevalent - and all because Felix screamed "GIMP" out loud and it's a nice competition to Photoshop. xDDD
