I've lately been quite obsessed with this app called StreetComplete. It gamifies contributing to OpenStreetMaps in a really nice way by giving you you little quests to do while you walk around. A fun way to get some steps in, to make you look closer at your environment and to do a good thing!

@InsertUser yes. They are using it to create crowd sourced low stress bike routes. We’re starting to build a network here in Berkeley. Feel free to contact them if you’re interested.
in reply to Orrock LXXXVI XLVII

No.

I can see no links to download their network data under an open license. In skimming their terms I think they seem very keen that no one but them ever benefits from it and they repeat "Copyright © 2025 Bike Streets, LLC. All rights reserved." on every page I've checked.

I will not be contributing to what appears to be a closed #OpenStreetMap derived database.

I would much rather improve an actual community project like OSM with data that can be used by others.

Do you have fun zines about how to switch away from big tech? Maybe a little intro to Mastodon, or something about the thrills of libre office?

I'm going to do a little peer workshop in a bit to help activists with a non-tech background start shifting away from big tech.

It would be cool to have some zines/printouts to share.

in reply to Cyberlyra

@cyberlyra @sly_vi @trib At the moment the group I'm working with aren't engaged in any activism that's illegal. Their main risk is reputational (getting fired for talking about Palestine), and they're not trying to avoid that. Their main motivation is to tm shift away from the big tech companies that are complicit in genocide.

@cyberlyra @trib I've also followed this project, it's really awesome! I really like the focus on "real people's problems" instead of tech problems (which can be resolved with elbow grease or throwing money at an independent company)

Some friends of mine had critics about the VPN part, like "We should stop presenting VPNs as a panacea for security, it's not.
Sure, it can prevent your Internet provider or the state to read your traffic, which is great, but most you're still at the mercy of wherever your VPN tunnel ends (ie: which country), and VPN companies could potentially read your stuff, if asked for by law enforcement
VPN is tool in the tool chain, not a stopgap solution for security"

Yah there is no purpose in this society other than trading. Ancient practice that has transformed us all into merchants and consumers. Until that is recognized there is no path towards a solution.

There's only one thing worse than having too many people in critical positions of power, that don't understand Root Cause Analysis; and that's too many that do, and STILL choose abuse of power.

It's one thing in burning fossil fuels, following a major revolution like the Industrial Revolution. It's another to have a clear path to graduating the burning application, and continuing to burn it, put future generations at risk, for the sake of more profit.

And the longer this continues; the more expendable our species is.

Stop the #ecocide #genocide. Replace the root causes.

Tu as vu les conditions d'utilisation ?

in reply to BohwaZ

@booteille @Bristow_69

in reply to tibo lalu

Je vais faire mes recherches la dessus. C'est peut-être tout simplement pas du ressort de la CC ce genre de close.

'Why don't people just [simple solution]' is always asked by someone who doesn't understand the problem, doesn't understand humans, or doesn't understand both. AKA, Hacker News.
in reply to JA Westenberg

stupid questions provide good opportunity to explain complex situations. Also, very often people claiming to understand a bit of a complex situation are found unable to answer simple questions. they just drench themselves into complexity, never thinking about the big picture

No selection, i ordered before , the artist made it throught the art shop( can't remember which) . I recieved the lovely calendar. Ordering from other countries is chaos, I ordered #jolla phone from Finland, no phone, my order been returned to the sender, and i end up with 60£ pounds of royal mail stamps, with no option to get a refund.
in reply to Kumar McMillan

@kumarvibe @experimentmapass Many thanks :). For UK orders please contact me via my Etsy shop via the "request custom order button" with the desired product name and amount etsy.com/shop/SylviaRitterArt. Sadly, Brexit made everything more difficult.
in reply to Sylvia Ritter

Yes, thank you, Etsy the shop, but believe me it is chaos here, custom service is out of service, online services not functioning, you need to drive to the depot, on my side is 1 hour one way, plus is a 1 hours queue at the depot. And they say, i can't you parcel , it has been returned to the sender. Royal mail united with parcelforce...
in reply to Jacob Urlich 🌍

@experimentmapass Very sorry to hear it got so difficult in the UK. Good to hear the calendar arrived at your place despite the chaos.
in reply to Sylvia Ritter

@experimentmapass huh. I don’t have any problems in Edinburgh with Royal mail, not even with international packages (I just owed a tariff once which was annoying).

After living in the US for many years I can say their mail service was 10x worse 😂

I'm really excited to eventually see this film, "Shifting Baselines", that I'm in! It looks SO COOL from the trailer, and there's a big picture of me on IMDB for it, haha weird. (But honestly, it's pretty hard to tell it's me because it was -25C or so when they were filming me here in Feb 2024)

Trailer here! viff.org/whats-on/viff25-shift… Right now I think you can only see it in film festivals, but if there's one near you, you should definitely watch it!

in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

Will have to watch this!

I love that, on imdb, they say it "stars: Samantha Lawler, Jonathan McDowell and Daniel Pauly"

You're a star! (In many ways 😃 )

The climate crisis is turning into a climate catastrophe, we have a mental health epidemic, a plastic epidemic, an inequality crisis, a pollution crisis, an energy crisis, a misinformation crisis, a migration crisis, a corporate crisis, an AI slop crisis, an art decline crisis, an economic crisis – and one positive thing – a sex retreat party 🤣. We're doing pretty well, aren’t we 😀

“He’s playing 4D chess while society plays checkers” okay but have you considered that if everyone else is playing checkers and you show up with a chess set, you’re not a genius, you’re just the guy who can’t read the room? Like the optimal strategy for a checkers game is not “bring chess pieces and move them diagonally while muttering about zugzwang” that’s just losing at checkers with a superiority complex
