Comet C/2025 A6 #Lemmon in the constellation Boötes, on the evening of October 24th. Captured from the light polluted outskirts of Munich.

I've lately been quite obsessed with this app called StreetComplete. It gamifies contributing to OpenStreetMaps in a really nice way by giving you you little quests to do while you walk around. A fun way to get some steps in, to make you look closer at your environment and to do a good thing!

No.
I can see no links to download their network data under an open license. In skimming their terms I think they seem very keen that no one but them ever benefits from it and they repeat "Copyright © 2025 Bike Streets, LLC. All rights reserved." on every page I've checked.
I will not be contributing to what appears to be a closed #OpenStreetMap derived database.
I would much rather improve an actual community project like OSM with data that can be used by others.
Do you have fun zines about how to switch away from big tech? Maybe a little intro to Mastodon, or something about the thrills of libre office?
I'm going to do a little peer workshop in a bit to help activists with a non-tech background start shifting away from big tech.
It would be cool to have some zines/printouts to share.

@cyberlyra @trib I've also followed this project, it's really awesome! I really like the focus on "real people's problems" instead of tech problems (which can be resolved with elbow grease or throwing money at an independent company)
Some friends of mine had critics about the VPN part, like "We should stop presenting VPNs as a panacea for security, it's not.
Sure, it can prevent your Internet provider or the state to read your traffic, which is great, but most you're still at the mercy of wherever your VPN tunnel ends (ie: which country), and VPN companies could potentially read your stuff, if asked for by law enforcement
VPN is tool in the tool chain, not a stopgap solution for security"
Yah there is no purpose in this society other than trading. Ancient practice that has transformed us all into merchants and consumers. Until that is recognized there is no path towards a solution.

There's only one thing worse than having too many people in critical positions of power, that don't understand Root Cause Analysis; and that's too many that do, and STILL choose abuse of power.
It's one thing in burning fossil fuels, following a major revolution like the Industrial Revolution. It's another to have a clear path to graduating the burning application, and continuing to burn it, put future generations at risk, for the sake of more profit.
And the longer this continues; the more expendable our species is.

Tu as vu les conditions d'utilisation ?
Je vais faire mes recherches la dessus. C'est peut-être tout simplement pas du ressort de la CC ce genre de close.

@experimentmapass huh. I don’t have any problems in Edinburgh with Royal mail, not even with international packages (I just owed a tariff once which was annoying).
After living in the US for many years I can say their mail service was 10x worse 😂

Hey, spoilers, man. We're not allowed to figure the year's big surprise twist when it comes to the Russia/Ukraine escalation for a couple of months yet.

I'm really excited to eventually see this film, "Shifting Baselines", that I'm in! It looks SO COOL from the trailer, and there's a big picture of me on IMDB for it, haha weird. (But honestly, it's pretty hard to tell it's me because it was -25C or so when they were filming me here in Feb 2024)
Trailer here! viff.org/whats-on/viff25-shift… Right now I think you can only see it in film festivals, but if there's one near you, you should definitely watch it!

The climate crisis is turning into a climate catastrophe, we have a mental health epidemic, a plastic epidemic, an inequality crisis, a pollution crisis, an energy crisis, a misinformation crisis, a migration crisis, a corporate crisis, an AI slop crisis, an art decline crisis, an economic crisis – and one positive thing – a sex retreat party 🤣. We're doing pretty well, aren’t we 😀

I added a motor to mine. Hand operation is ok for wide-angle lenses, but telephoto lenses deserve a motor.

in reply to Derick Rethans • • •@derickr Thanks! I'm glad I could pull out this much detail, but my gear was probably not even a whole lot better than yours! Just a 135mm lens and a mirrorless camera without a tracking mount.
See below for a single exposure.
The real difference came from stacking over 400 images which honestly was a ton of work!

in reply to Derick Rethans • • •@derickr Yes, it's extremely powerful!
This is probably a bit of an extreme example though, because I'm using over 440x2.5" exposures.
Ideally you'd want to use a star tracker so you can use longer (e.g. 30") exposures which means you need to process way fewer images.
Comet stacking is also pretty involved because of the relative motion of the comet against the stars.
But with maybe just three minutes exposure you probably don't have to worry about that and it's a lot easier.
Clear skies!
