Recent reporting has described unlawful encroachment of ranching, mining, and logging into #Nicaragua’s protected forests. Impacts are particularly visible in two of the country’s large biosphere reserves, Indio Maíz and Bosawás, with forest disturbance alerts in 2024 from CTrees’ LUCA platform already far surpassing the area of alerts in 2023

You know what we did to the Water Protectors in North Dakota? We arrested them. We arrested them for rioting on the high plains!

... notably, Barack Obama stood by and did nothing and said nothing. For Shame.

How Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency colluded with industry to avoid a neonic pesticide ban

1. Receive wetland sampling data from Canadian scientist that clearly shows neonic levels that cause harm and must be banned under Canadian law.
2. Share that data with industry groups without researcher's permission, urging them to find "other results". Give them 4 1/2 years to do this.
3. Industry, Bayer and others, finds pretext to throw out "problematic" sites on the grounds that they can't be found on satellite imagery in autumn (normal for seasonal wetlands). Submits their own proprietary, cherry picked, non peer-reviewed data, much of it from simulated rather than real world data collection.
4. Lo and behold a ban on neonics is not needed after all!
5. Ignore scientist's rebuttal.

"Mounting scientific evidence suggests that being infected with SARS-CoV-2 — the virus that causes COVID — profoundly impacts brain health in many ways."

It's taking too long, but mainstream media is slowly doing more to cover the risks of repeated #COVID19 infections.

British Columbia, Canada election - Results still uncertain

"It’s a strange time in politics when during an atmospheric river people come out and vote for a party that’s denying the reality of climate change." - Sonia Furstenau

It seems the majority did not, but 43.5% did, WTF?

They believe conspiracy theories without seeing the one right in front of their nose that they are falling for.

Question about #Friendica thumbs down button

Hey #Friendica users, what is the protocol for the dislike (thumbs down) button?. If someone posts some horrific bit of news, should I post thumbs up that I appreciate them informing me, or thumbs down that I deplore the terrible happenings? @Friendica Support

Zionists don't want us to see Palestinians as human beings. That's why we must do everything in our power to show the warmth and bravery of the people of Palestine.

There are no words to capture the bravery of rescuers, healthcare workers, & journalists, most of them in their 20s, who have been in the trenches for over a year of horror, doing impossible work day after day, abandoned by the world to face their enemy with only each other.

Sea Sand Dredging

For over 20 years, Indonesia has banned the export of sea sand in an effort to preserve marine ecosystems and protect the livelihoods of coastal communities. However, Indonesian Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan announced that as of October 8, two new regulations would go into effect that effectively lift the ban and allow sea sand dredging.

Copernicus Climate Bulletin

September 2024 was 1.54°C above the pre-industrial level globally, the second highest ever recorded (2023 was the highest). Note the graph shows year to date running average not individual months' records, which is a bit confusing.

September kept 2024 on track to be the warmest year on record, with the global average temperature anomaly for January-September 2024 0.71°C above the 1991-2020 average, which is 0.19°C warmer than the same period in 2023.

Better Banking

Better Banking is the next step in this year long alphabetical programme to become a more ethical citizen. The bank rundown is UK focused, but I know the main point.

Here in Canada, a few years ago the Canada Broadcasting Corp. did an expose of how banks pressure and bully employees to upsell and mislead customers. That alone should have been enough for everyone to quit dealing with them. They're all bad; and they all fund fossil fuels this being Canada, so there's little to choose. The answer is to go to credit unions.

I have opened an account with a federated (accredited nation-wide, this is a new thing) credit union with online banking, which suits my needs. Still have my old account as Canada doesn't seem to have such a neat way of switching over as described in the post. I'll gradually phase it out as I test out the new one to make sure I can do everything I need to. #ethicalconsumer

I’m going to be checking out this whole series, thank you. But first, I have to say that graphic is astounding, devastating, heartbreaking. I truly had no idea that the global “biomass” population had gotten so dramatically out of balance.
