Respect new names for popes but throw tantrums over pronouns for neighbors. Got it.

Never take conservatives at face value. The reasons they give to objecting to things is never the reason they actually object. For example, the forced gestation movement has absolutely nothing to do with "protecting innocent lives". Likewise, their objection to trans people changing their names has nothing to do with the difficulties of remembering that someone has a new name.

I read this soon after it came out; I was waiting for it. I quite enjoyed it.

Having read about it being a longer exposition on an earlier story, I did not read the predecessor first.

So after finishing The City and its Uncertain Walls, I went back and read End of the World and Hard-Boiled Wonderland. I was surprised at the similarity. I mean I enjoyed both books but I don't get all the fuss about the re-write.

@demerara Also, the original translation of Hard Boiled Wonderland was abridged and rather creatively reworded. There is a newer, much longer translation that is closer to the original Japanese that was released apparently in anticipation of this new book. Very interesting to compare this tale across these various versions which are surprisingly different. I'm glad he came back to that mysterious walled village to make up for the cliff hanger ending!

Today in Writing History May 5, 1864: Nellie Bly, American journalist and author, was born on this day. Bly was famous for her record-breaking trip around the world, which she completed in 72 days. This was faster than Phineas Fogg’s trip, in Jules Verne’s “Around the World in 80 Days.” However, she also pioneered investigative journalism. In one of her most celebrated pieces, she went undercover to report on abuse and neglect at the Women’s Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell’s Island. Her report created a sensation, which led to some reforms.

In the latest in Academic complicity with Israel's Genocide against the Palestinian people, New York University School of Law has just barred 31 pro-Palestine law school students from campus facilities and demanded that they sign away their right to protest in exchange for being allowed to return. If the students don’t renounce their right to protest on campus, they will be unable to sit for final exams.
