Took my TIME with the bow tie. Did a few practice cuts and the bandsaw cut went better than any previous attempts. Note to self, in the future start with wider pieces so the cut doesn't start at then corners.

Did the rip and cross cut on the table saw. I don't have a cross cut sled so for a small piece like this I needed a clamp for proper pressure and safety. Then I spent a good bit of time with a chisel and card scraper to clean up the bandsaw cut (I need to learn how to tune it better).

I made this one slightly bigger than the existing cut but apparently way less than I thought so I had very little room for error in cutting the mortise? inlay? I'm pretty happy with the fit, the third photo shows the most egregious angle and I had to work to find it. Now I need to make it deeper and make another cut on the other end of the board.

Lots of time with hand tools today and I really enjoyed the peace and quiet in the shop, especially since it wasn't a million degrees!

The legs are done! Well... three sides of the legs look the same, like the left one. No, they're done! This right one will definitely be the back outside. Love it when the pieces pick where they need to be instead of me having to make a choice.

Onto the bowtie on the bottom. Well... I have to redo it entirely because I reasoned through the grain orientation wrong. I aligned the grain of the maple bowtie when I needed to make it perpendicular to that of the walnut so during wood expansion it expands the other way and prevents the crack from growing.
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

It's for the best, this was a bad fit but not the worst given that it was my first time doing inlay. I'll make a bigger bow tie tomorrow to cover it all. It'll be an absolute unit.

Made a paper template for the rise legs and it was a pleasure to use my new marking knife. Good sharp tools make such a difference.

Cut the legs out on the bandsaw, I need so much more practice. I don't have a template following router flush trim bit so the paper template was mostly helpful to not have to make complex measurements and marking twice. Going to take the slab to my friend's tomorrow for another round through the planer. I'm getting close!

Back to the slab build thread. Took time to declutter and make some space in the shop yesterday. All the lumber on the rack was on the floor, a lot more room for activities now, but still ways to go (strategically cropped photo).

Had to flatten the epoxy, it was my first time and it went well-ish. Mistakes were made, but I feel good about all the things I learned. When you do knowledge work all day, seeing results of your actions in the physical world is great, even if it's failure. I did some repairs with black CA glue but I'll have to take it back to my friend's planer and take an ⅛" (3 mm) off.

If you're following along still, thanks! And let me know if there's something specific you want to see. I'm not good at any of this but happy to answer questions for anyone interested in getting into woodworking. Especially if you didn't grow up around tools; I didn't, not sure if we had more than a screwdriver, if that.

Did another new thing today, mixed and poured epoxy! Popping the air bubbles was the most fun part. I mixed more than I needed and it got way too hot and started smoking when the left over started curing. In the future I know to spread out left overs in a thin layer to let it cure. That's the current state of the slab, I 'm really hoping it's one of those things where it needs to look worse before it starts looking better. Up next will be a bowtie for the crack on the underside and then decide on if I want to round over the the bottoms and/or the tops of the straight edges, then legs, joinery, sanding, finish.

I've been strapped for time this week and this will be the last update for a couple weeks due to other commitments. Thanks for following along and the encouragement.

Today was leg (design) day on the PineNote!
I don't know if I have the skills to actually build this with the angles as drawn. I want something that's not just rectangles sticking out of a slab, want to try stuff, but without doing too many design elements and detracting from the wood figure.

I don't have enough walnut for legs but I have some cherry that I can mill up to be 1" (2.5 cm) thick or the most sensible way to say it: ⁴/₄ four quarter 🤦🏽‍♂️

Tomorrow we cut into the slab... hyperventilation!

I bought this slab of walnut two years. This has been many things in my head over that time. It's too short and narrow for a lot of those applications, but the two year timer is up and it has to become something.

So it'll be a monitor riser shelf for my desk. With the live edge on the front and the back squared off to avoid the sap wood. Looks like it'll be 44½" (113 cm) on the 55" (140 cm) table top, 12" (30.5 cm) at the narrowest and 15" (38 cm) at the widest.

Did some rough block planing and put some mineral oil to get a feel for what the showcase feature is going to be... just look at that crotch figure 😍

I've done it, I've got a #thinkpad and I've installed #linux. It's exactly how I remember from high school. Takes forever, half works, and now I have a new hobby. So like all my hobbies lets do a #buildthread!
