by Brian Bull, Underscore Native News October 6, 2026
Excerpt: "Native empowerment has been the theme of Daybreak since it was founded by #activists in the early 1970s. Led by #BernieWhitebear , a large group occupied the decommissioned #FortLawton military installation as part of a larger, coordinated movement to #reoccupy spaces once inhabited by #NativePeople before #colonization. The occupation ultimately led to the creation of the Daybreak Star facility, which broke ground in 1976 and opened a year later as a cultural center with social and education services for the local Indigenous population. Whitebear served as director of the United Indians of All Tribes Foundation in the center until 2000 when he died from colon cancer."

"The Native Schools Act of 1867, and subsequent policies, enforced English-only instruction. These policies actively discouraged or punished children for speaking Māori, treating it as inferior to an “English” education. The impact of these policies was significant: while 90 percent of Māori schoolchildren could speak Māori in 1913, only 26 percent could by 1953."

Execution of Louis Riel (Nov 16, 1885)
Following his surrender, Louis Riel was tried for treason in Regina, found guilty, and executed on November 16, 1885. His death ignited national debate — respect in Québec, outrage among Métis and Indigenous peoples — and remains a defining moment in Canadian identity. #NorthWestRebellion #LouisRiel #Canada #Regina #Colonization
It’s a trip for colonizers to flip out over immigrants to their country. (That goes double when the colonizers actively engaged in colonizing don’t like that people have already existed in the places they’re trying to block off for themselves.)

The state of Israel is “the most successful land‑back project, the greatest decolonization project,” a New Zealand Māori activist told the first-of-its-kind Building Indigenous‑Jewish Friendship conference in Toronto.
“Indigeneity is demonstrated by historical, collective continuity with a distinct ethnic identity, language, culture, rituals or traditions, economic, social, legal, and religious and spiritual belief systems that predate subsequent invaders or colonizers,” LaForme told Temple Sinai congregants.
