Raging killer currents will be possible in side canyons & narrow slot canyons. Low-water crossings may be flooded,” wrote the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Near the epicenter of this weekend’s #FlashFloods in the #GrandCanyon, 1.24 inches of rain fell in a 3-hour period Saturday, including 0.84 inches in 1 hour. High intensity rainfall on steep, rocky & #drought affected terrain meant that the water wasn’t absorbed into the ground & mostly ran off into the canyons & creeks below.
A record-breaking #ElNiño & a #marine #heatwave in the #Pacific Ocean have combined to load the atmosphere with moisture, helping fuel the deadly #flooding. On the backdrop of #ClimateChange, these factors have driven atmospheric moisture levels 5 to 15% higher than average. That has loaded the dice for downpours this summer, such as those that hit the #GrandCanyon Saturday.
This weekend’s #FlashFlooding, which has killed at least one person in the Grand Canyon, wasn’t an isolated weather event. The torrential rain was part of Arizona’s monsoon season, which runs from June 15 through Sept 30. But the monsoon alone doesn’t tell the whole story.

NPS: A significant flash-flood event occurred in Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area on August 29, beginning at approximately 2:30 p.m.
As of the morning of August 30, 62 individuals have been evacuated from Phantom Ranch and the lower North Kaibab Trail. Additional individuals are scheduled to be evacuated this morning from Cottonwood Campground and Phantom Ranch in coordination with the National Park Service and Arizona Department of Public Safety. Evacuees are being transported to the Maswik Lodge Cafeteria on the South Rim, where the American Red Cross is coordinating assistance. No injuries have been reported as of the latest available information.

Many hydro power plants are located in the mountains, in areas now especially vulnerable to rockslides and glacial lake outbursts. Risk of dam collapse increases, threatening communities downriver, and electricity generation counting on hydro output is no longer a viable grid strategy.
