Yikes, that is a LOT of campsites that were within the flash flood footprint. Apparently wildfire burn scar flooding, which explains why it was so intense.

Draws the climate connection to other recent events in the same region, and to the Himalaya as a whole where #glacier melt has doubled since 2000.

Many hydro power plants are located in the mountains, in areas now especially vulnerable to rockslides and glacial lake outbursts. Risk of dam collapse increases, threatening communities downriver, and electricity generation counting on hydro output is no longer a viable grid strategy.

The ice-rock avalanche dammed the Lhende Khola River before a wall of water and debris burst downstream. A nearby M4.4 earthquake may have played a role, but that link is unconfirmed. Death toll: at least 160
