Stars becoming visible in the evening sky as seen from the mountains of southern New Mexico.

Brilliant Venus is in the lower left quadrant and is the brightest object in the frame.

Along the left edge is the star Spica in the constellation Virgo.

Along the upper edge, left of center is the star Arcturus, and the Big Dipper is in the upper right quadrant.

The lights of the village of La Luz are sprinkled along the floor of the Tularosa basin.

I remember when the prevailing theory was that the Venusian lithosphere just sat there until it catastrophically overturned every few hundred million years. Now it’s starting to look like Venus may not have Earth-like plate tectonics, but it’s not a fully stagnant lid either.

The most exciting possibility: perhaps we’re getting a look at what may have been the prevailing mode in the earliest part of Earth history.

💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🦊🔢 Archaeologists have identified #Saktahnwaax, a #Maya mathematician-astronomer from around 800 CE, as the first named scientist of the pre-Columbian Americas.

Found in a painted chamber at #Xultun, #Guatemala, his name appears alongside advanced formulas, including a 2,920 day cycle that integrates #solar and #Venus years.

The Moon and Venus a few hours ago, with my phone:

You can see how the entire Moon is visible actually but a slice of it is directly lit by the Sun so it makes it appear in that particular way to our naked eyes. Super cool.
