I keep saying I want to leave facebook, and made a step towards that goal by joining the fediverse. But... I haven't really posted much here and still keep going back to facebook as my default. It's a bad habit that is hard to kick. The biggest problem is that I don't actually know anyone on mastodon or friendica, so it's like I am posting into the void. Do random Internet strangers really want to read my posts? Do I want that level of publicity?
I hate facebook, but there are still people I know on it that I probably wouldn't ever connect with again if I quit the platform entirely. So I keep holding on, then I get upset with myself for not being able to let go .

It's difficult to start. We don't know anyone, so we need to look for people who might interest us, since our friends won't come. You need to fill your feed with content you like and actively search for it. People may be interested in your posts, but first, they need to find you. To do that, you need to post for days or weeks without expecting engagement. You also need to take the first step and engage with people you don't know — that's how they will see you. My account is newer than yours, and most of the people who follow me followed me after I followed them first.
It's not just a "Fediverse" difficulty, it's like that in real life, too. Go to parties where you don't know anyone. Get to know new people. Go study in another city. Starting from zero is not always easy.
I would say don't leave your friends (e.g., connect to Facebook to get their news), but try to create a second space in the Fediverse and make it grow little by litt

I would say don't leave your friends (e.g., connect to Facebook to get their news), but try to create a second space in the Fediverse and make it grow little by little. Since you're on Friendica, you can subscribe to RSS feeds of your favorite media and blogs so it helps filling your timeline. To start following people, I usually navigate to mastodon.social to look for hashtags and people since my Friendica instance doesn't show everything.
Try to take the first step to interact with strangers so they can see you. Participate in random discussions. You might not find your best friends here, but you can have a good time and read interesting things. :o)
Good luck! 🍀
