People are sharing their "Spotify unwrapped" analyses of what they listened to on the streamer this year.

So here's mine.

Nothing. Zilch. Nada.

Give your money to the artists, not the megalomaniac billionaire techbros.

in reply to Tony Printezis

@TonyPrintezis Seems like a good time to promote GetMusic - getmusic.fm/ - free BandCamp codes provided by artists to help new listeners discover them.

I've found some fantastic stuff this year using GM that I probably wouldn't have otherwise.

Today I learned that NASA has a collection of free ebooks that can be downloaded as pdfs or ebub format.

The science books even include a children’s section with fun activites and coloring books!

Was it fun to draw a random AI world where nothing makes sense?
in reply to Fell

@fell It was 😆 But it was surprisingly an interesting exercice too, far away the usual color palette I enjoy using. You can check the painting timelapse to see the hesitations: peppercarrot.com/0_sources/min…

If it surprises you, it’s information. If it confirms your bias, it’s entertainment. If it makes you hate your neighbor, it’s a weapon.

RE: mastodon.social/@Tutanota/1156…

We have to apologize as the statement that "Meta AI will read your private messages" is wrong.

Meta will use your conversation with its AI to show you personalized ads. Here's the Meta announcement: about.fb.com/news/2025/10/impr…

🚨Starting Dec 16th, Meta AI will read your private messages - unless you opt out now! 🚨

Opting out is hilariously complex, but we've got you covered:

1. Go to Meta Privacy Center on DESKTOP
2. Privacy Policy
3. Other Policies and articles
4. How Meta uses information for generative AI model and features
5. Your right to object
6. Learn more and submit requests here
7. Tick: I want to object to or restrict...

Oh, and @noybeu is already on it: tuta.com/blog/noyb-meta-ai-is-… 🍿

This won't change that Meta is an unjust company who sticks to proprietary malware and spyware development.

A distinction without a real difference, but the accuracy is appreciated

The extent of global sea ice cover is more than 3 million square kilometers below the 1981-2010 average. This is the 2nd lowest on record for this date over the satellite-era.

Here we go again... another season with unusual warmth around the Hudson Bay and a corresponding record late start to the #Arctic sea ice freeze-up...

in reply to Zack Labe

does the warmer bay have a significant effect on the increase in polar air vortex/escapes?
in reply to Pusher of Pixels

@pixelpusher220 The lack of cold over the Hudson Bay can definitely 'reduce' the impact/severity of cold air outbreaks further south.

Just because I had to dig this up for an article, here's a Wayback Machine link to where Starlink said lots of grand things about their commitments to making their satellites dark back in 2020 (no longer on the Starlink website, of course): web.archive.org/web/2021030402…
in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

And here are the current measurements of Starlink brightnesses by Mallama and Cole 2025: academic.oup.com/mnrasl/articl…

Everybody is too bright. OneWeb manages to halfway make it below the recommended limit, but everybody else pretty much sucks.

in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

Oh yeah, if you think the AST SpaceMobile Bluebirds are bad now, wait until you see what they're launching next month: businesswire.com/news/home/202…

2,400 square feet! It's going to be brighter than the ISS. Fuck. And they want 60 of them? FUUUUCK.

I hope that company goes bankrupt before then. That will seriously interfere with astronomy. The rich are a cancer on humanity.

😟

(This needs a "brighter" label and up-arrow for public outreach. And "factor 250 brighter" from 8.0 to 2.0 mag.)

in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

Yes I saw, but the public will understand if there's a label "sooooo much brighter!"...

It's sad.

But I think all things Musk eventually turn out a lie.

in reply to Prof. Sam Lawler

“Aesthetic limit” is way too nice. “Intrusive limit” would be better.

Half the emails I get about my YouTube channel: "Love that your channel has no intro, no CTAs, no editing - please never change"

The other half: "I noticed your channel has no intro, no CTAs, no editing - our agency can fix this for $2,000/month"

This year's #Arctic sea ice freeze-up is clearly the latest on record for the Baffin Bay region (located between Greenland and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago). The extent of ice cover is a record low for the date there.

Today, I came over this Inuit Calendar which, I guess, would be based on long term overservations but probably does not yet reflect the latest climate change.

In every dystopian novel: the government bans books.

In reality: we gave up reading voluntarily.

This is one of those Brave New World vs. 1984 things. Which is actually worse?

do you enjoy blaming teens for the myriad reasons that it's harder for them to pick up a book and/or easier for them to find so much more reading material than just traditional books?

They say, 'Do not idle the engine.' Oh, please—cancel all roadworks, make public transport free all day, and allow people to take paid days off work. You greedy, short-sighted bureaucrats have completely lost the plot—who you are, how you got here, and where you’re even headed.
