FWIW, most of the money goes to the labels. The artists are getting screwed by pretty much everyone. The label contracts used to be a based roughly on the idea that we all used to buy a £10 CD every month, so that's the pound of flesh the labels demand per user. It's just that none of that now goes to artists. Streamers have surprisingly little say in the service they can offer.

As a musician, I have never used Spotify and never will. Years ago I signed up to put my music out there but when I saw the reality of their business model, I didn’t bother to post anything. Spotify has destroyed the arts for profit, fuck ‘em.
I steam because it is convenient and gives me more of a mix. I also purchased a good amount of songs this year. They aren't mutually exclusive. Plus doing both is technically even better for the artist, as they get the purchase and the click

I'm loving this mini series. The need for cash investment in education vs compromising on tech is a very real problem. I've had a thought - Familiars are meant to form a special bond with a magic user to help guide them along their own unique path. If they all have the same familiar then, even if it did work, that would really hurt their culture overall. It would become too homogeneous.

a friend of a friend is a student at Cornell and going through exactly this right now (and working on transferring out of their dream college) they shared a document where the administration defended their AI policies and in the defense cite "AI Copilot" output as their source. I'm kinda disappointed I'm not seeing some malicious compliance source checking where they apply the same battery of checking sources one would to citations of obscure books for made up Wikipedia edits. Would an AI model be a primary or secondary source?

We brought this up with the city planners where I live! I said that there were too many big rigs for these roundabouts that they love to put in. The truckers end up just going in a straight line, which is honestly the best way to deal with it, if there's room. Most tractor trailers don't have any chance of getting around a tight circle.
@kimlockhartga I’ve seen one go straight through only to get stuck on the center bump. The bump was lined with steel and the metal grating on metal noise as it tried to escape was unnerving. I discovered lorries can accumulate quite a bit of dirt and soil underneath their carriages. Eventually it got through after a couple of back and forth.

@kimlockhartga You can design them to allow extra-long vehicles to drive over parts of the middle circle, using “truck aprons”. Basically beveled edges instead of straight curb stones. That helps a bit. @kasdeya @trochee @eivind @aburka

We then adopted the UK's system, where traffic on (or leaving) the roundabout has the right of way.

@RolfBly @geert @aburka @drwho @kasdeya @trochee when traffic levels get too high or downstream bottlenecks queue onto the roundabout, or flows are just too unbalanced to allow reasonable entry flow, roundabouts stop working efficiently. Signals can help, but it's just managing congestion at that point.

This year's #Arctic sea ice freeze-up is clearly the latest on record for the Baffin Bay region (located between Greenland and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago). The extent of ice cover is a record low for the date there.
Today, I came over this Inuit Calendar which, I guess, would be based on long term overservations but probably does not yet reflect the latest climate change.
The graph speaks miles. Shows Huxley was right: that we'd walk into sweet bliss of oblivion out of our own volition, rather than pushed into it by force like Orwell envisioned.
The graph is also quite clear on who will be the leaders and owners of the next generation.
It's so weird that HP is credited with an explosion in teenage reading in the US when, if plotted on a longer graph, it looks like a momentary stemming of the tide at best.

Ive read a few dead trees recently, but more and more long form (books, novels, stories, papers) are on a computer.
When they ask these reading questions, do they clarify that the medium does not matter, or are they "it must be a dead tree or its not really reading"?
We've been doing the Huxleyian dystopia for a couple decades but that wasn't fast enough for some people so they're pushing the Orwell/Bradbury scenario on top of that.
Poor kids had nothing but copycat garbage of endlessly grim teenager-saves-everything-without-help-from-adults dystopian series after Harry Potter set the template. Every new story HAS to become a universe now, and must be movie-ready.
I have moved to 60-70% audiobooks but nevertheless, at any given time I have ~3 books underway. And my grandkids are both voracious readers. I may not often like what they read 😂 but they love books.

I might bring my trash grabber and a small bag to clean up the street as we walk.
Crystal sits in my lap and we play different games. Her favorite is the surprise game, where I surprise her by suddenly bouncing my legs up high or pulling them out from under her. She tries to guess when it might happen, sometimes I follow a pattern, and activate the surprise if I hear a certain sound.

Since it started getting chilly I have been sticking my hands in Crystal's coat pockets to keep them warm, and discovered she keeps a variety of interesting things in her pockets. I have to guess what they are by touch, and sometimes I get sneaky and move things from one pocket to the other, or put in a pinceone or pebble from the ground.
Today we had fun taking silly pictures of what's in Crystal's pocket.

Then you could put your music on to an mP3 player and listen in private.
Besides the initial downloads the techbros would not be able to gather any more useful data about you while you were listening. Nor push ads at you.
If you find something you really like then buy the album/track or, even better go to a live concert.
