Our pop-up channel for the FediVision 2024 voting period is live.
It's an alternative way you can hear the entrants if a linear format. It's on our main site below our regular channels.
Keep an eye on @announce and #Fedivision2024 for info, fun and light hearted lobbying.
To kickoff the voting period we'll have chat on for a bit as we are simulcasting our pop-up to the video/chat channel. The community will announce more hangouts fo the week.

I'm prototyping a fediverse sharing button. Anyone interested in giving it a try?
Feature highlights:
- shows a logo of supported fediverse software
- lets you share selected text
- remembers the last fediverse domain used

not just the fediverse but I really want a
share button across the websites and popular platforms like we have for Twitter, Facebook, Reddit etc
(it's a shame YouTube dot com still doesn't have it)
The adoption will come after the intrigue and familiarising it via a share icon will be of great service.
@cybeardjm Funny, I haven't actually thought about that. I didn't really make a WP version for simplesharingbuttons.com either.
But this is a great idea, it can definitely help with adoption. Thank you!
Simple Sharing Buttons Generator
Share to Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks using simple HTML buttonssimplesharingbuttons.com
@cybeardjm I've thought about that, but I'm honestly done with corporate-owned social media. I'm still pretty attached to this old project as it's one of my most popular ones, I've had people make donations over the first few years, and I was also recognized as the creator on a job interview.
I haven't touched it in a while, but I really can't bring myself to shutting it down.
It's something you can add to your site to make it easier to share it across the fediverse.
See a demo here: fediverse-share-button.stefanb…
You can scroll to the bottom, you will see a field where you can put your fediverse domain, eg. theblower.au.

Some feedback:
- There is no hint that you have to select some text first.
- When I select too much text, I get an Error code 502 from Cloudflare
@gunchleoc Thank you for trying this out!
So you don't really have to select any text, by default the page title and URL are used.
Let me look into how to best surface this functionality. And I'll definitely look into the error when too much of the text is selected. Thank you for reporting that!
@gunchleoc Ah, got it, maybe something else was broken and got fixed.
Thank you, I appreciate all your help!
Also took me to it where I would have to log in instead of just using my login rust was active. Not sure why.
@Netux Thank you for giving this a try!
Interesting though, not sure why you'd have been logged out, at least I can't think of how the sharing button could affect that
Also, the last domain does get saved, after you click the Share button. Mind sharing a bit more about what OS and browser you're using so I can look into this a bit more?
I'm not really interested in a share button, but I'd love to see this function inspire @nextcloud for profile settings!

About
Bio: about me
I am Glyn Normington, a retired software developer, interested in helping others improve their programming skills. I worked in software for 39 years, edited IETF RFC 9535, and have been teaching part-time at the University of Winchester.
I'm married with three children and six grandchildren.
I'm delighted to live in the lovely city of Winchester, which is south west of London, England. Winchester has many beautiful buildings, including Winchester Cathedral (below).
I grew up in the county of Yorkshire and studied mathematics at University College, Oxford. During my first and second years at “univ”, I lived on Logic Lane in the building with the bike racks, below. I like to think that logic is one of the guiding principles of my life, although my narrowly rationalistic, and in fact atheistic, worldview in that period of my life was soon to change.
After graduation, I moved to Hampshire for work, which I guess makes me an economic migrant.
I'm now a follower of Jesus¹, but very much a work in progress. I'm involved in a local church where I look after the technical side of live streaming. I belong to a small group which meets most weeks to study the bible, pray, and support each other. You may wonder how my faith fits with my love of logic, but the two are logically consistent. As CS Lewis once wrote: “Miracles do not, in fact, break the laws of nature”. The revolution in my understanding of the world occurred when I investigated the historical evidence for the bodily resurrection of Jesus.
My politics are left of (the UK) centre. I read The Guardian, but also subscribe to Prospect magazine, which is a bit more balanced. I was saddened by Brexit.
I love reading — Kazuo Ishiguro is one of my favourite authors — and try to keep fit, mostly by running. My wife and I enjoy walking and sailing. The joke goes that Yorkshiremen are like Scotsmen with all the generosity squeezed out, so I like repairability. BTW I use arch.
I find languages fascinating. I had to learn French at school, but then chose Russian as a second foreign language. I added Ancient Greek in order to avoid doing history.
Oh, and I'm left-handed. (If I know the barista, I occasionally order a decaf, skinny, left-handed flat white, because of the latte art.)
For what I'm up to at the moment, please see the now page. Feel free to contact me.
S. D. G.
¹ I would normally describe myself as a Christian, but some readers (especially in the USA) may associate this with right-wing nationalism, which isn't me.

As opposed to letting your site's visitors share the article on their instance after reading it.

This already relies heavily on JavaScript, to switch which instance to go to, that would be difficult to do without it.
So maybe I could make a default version that would only require adding the JS/CSS files, and a placeholder DIV, and add the form dynamically.
And the current version with the full HTML would be an option 2 for those who prefer it?
And I wonder how many of you are just holding out for a WordPress plugin version.

Adding an overlay with instructions, which would then open the sharing modal might be a bit too many steps? I do like the simplicity of the current approach.
I wonder if I could maybe change the text to something like "type your server name to share with the fediverse"?
That's a bit long, so not ideal either.
Stefan Bohacek
in reply to Stefan Bohacek • • •Also, a technical side note, the reason the text is not a real label is that I'm avoiding using an ID for any of the form elements, in case someone wants to use this on a blog that uses an infinite scroll, in which case you'd end up with non-unique IDs on the same page.
Wrapping the input in a label doesn't work too well either with this layout.
