I've been boosting these because it is absolutely vital to remember that we "can talk with each other and build new things without checking with the rulers first".
Yes, that includes science. And every other middle class and/or intellectual endeavor.
Doing things outside the current system is not easy, but the current system isn't easy, either, it's *familiar*.
And it's destroying lives. It's destroying all hope of humanity's survival. Complicity in that is not the only option. Actively promoting that is not the only option.
We can figure out how to do things without asking permission instead. And we're going to need to.
I was snarky yesterday, don't want to be snarky today. I also don't wanna argue with folks who DO make more money than I do (sorry scientists, I know you're poor compared to lawyers and businessmen but compared to unemployed dudes on disability supports just getting by, you aren't poor.) about how much compliance with the fascists is okay if it helps climate science, for example. I'm not that guy.I'm bugged because I think there's something *here* for me to sink my teeth into, mentally, a way to make sense (again, honestly) of how the vast middle class has abandoned pretty much every ethical standard to maintain an every-increasing precarity.
Our scientists can't imagine how they fit in the world beyond their funding structures, I think. They've forgotten they can talk with each other and build new things without checking with the rulers first.
