Indonesia lifts sea sand export ban, angering activists and coastal communities
After a 20-year ban, Indonesia is allowing companies to extract sea sand from its coastal waters. Activists say this will have devastating environmental consequences and could negatively impact coastal communities.Global Voices
Copernicus Climate Bulletin
September 2024 was 1.54°C above the pre-industrial level globally, the second highest ever recorded (2023 was the highest). Note the graph shows year to date running average not individual months' records, which is a bit confusing.
September kept 2024 on track to be the warmest year on record, with the global average temperature anomaly for January-September 2024 0.71°C above the 1991-2020 average, which is 0.19°C warmer than the same period in 2023.
Better Banking
Better Banking is the next step in this year long alphabetical programme to become a more ethical citizen. The bank rundown is UK focused, but I know the main point.
Here in Canada, a few years ago the Canada Broadcasting Corp. did an expose of how banks pressure and bully employees to upsell and mislead customers. That alone should have been enough for everyone to quit dealing with them. They're all bad; and they all fund fossil fuels this being Canada, so there's little to choose. The answer is to go to credit unions.
I have opened an account with a federated (accredited nation-wide, this is a new thing) credit union with online banking, which suits my needs. Still have my old account as Canada doesn't seem to have such a neat way of switching over as described in the post. I'll gradually phase it out as I test out the new one to make sure I can do everything I need to. #ethicalconsumer

Great news everyone! I saw code so terrible yesterday that I quit my job on the spot, for realsies. Enjoy what should be the last post about me gazing directly into corporate-hell:

Edit: they are thankfully still alive. They’re injured from the strike.
Both of my parents were in the Red Cross during the 75-90 civil war and have both said it wasn’t as bad, that they could still cross Israeli lines to help ppl at the time. Israel now just targets first responders as a matter of policy. This is a rogue, criminal regime.

Are there actually places where you don't have to pretend to be a machine, though? I thought it was just hard everywhere. And getting harder.
Dinan is from Sudan.

So, step 1 (they are alphabetical!) is Abandon Amazon
ethicalrevolution.co.uk/amazon…
Easy, I have already done this with the help of the behometh itself. A few years ago when I was trying to be a seller as well as a buyer I got mixed up with the multiple accounts, lost passwords, and Amazon's "change password" codes which were supposed to come by phone never did! A blessing in disguise! I decided to just leave it that way. However a family member who is a very ethical person is nevertheless constantly buying from Amazon including when they send me a gift..so the boxes still can show up on my doorstep. #ethicalconsumer

Gazan families of Canadians die because of lengthy bureaucracy designed to fail them
To my admittedly great surprise and pleasure, my neighbour Rana has been able to bring her sister, brother-in-law and one nephew to Canada, but she has many other family members in grave peril, maybe dead. She's desperately trying to raise funds with a GoFundMe and selling foods at the Farmers' Market.

And this, sadly, will probably get more views and reactions than little Fatima (9 years old) or little Mohammad (12) being killed just the other day.
A state targetting another state's civilians, there must be a name for that (yes, it's "war crimes").
It's all so sad, infuriating and fucked up.

in reply to Bread and Circuses • •This, for anyone who tries to argue that human overpopulation is not really a problem, out of misguided political correctness or tech-optimism or whatever.
Also, animal agriculture. Since everyone's not going to become vegan, can we at least promote the dietary fact that eating animal products sparingly is better for our health and get rid of these stupid carnivore fad diets?
