If you started paying attention to the US in 1960, this sure feels like the darkest timeline. But unfortunately, purges against Black & brown people are normal US behavior.
You know what's NOT normal US behavior?
This is the first time there's been a mass movement to STOP a purge in real time.
This is new and unusual. To get an idea of how weird this is, let's take a quick tour of some of the many times the US federal government has officially persecuted entire groups of people.
1929-1939: the US "repatriated" somewhere between 300K and 2M Mexican Americans. No due process. The federal government removed them from the US to "stop them from competing with Americans for jobs."
About half of the deported people were US citizens.
Few if any Anglo Americans seemed to have a problem with this.
Mexican Americans ran the court battles, protests, and educational campaigns against forced deportation on their own. While they were struggling to keep their families together day by day.
WW2: the US jails 120,000 people, who hadn't been charged of any crime, as a "precaution." 2/3 were US citizens. Many were farmers. White folks wanted their land, & got it.
The loss of so many skilled farmers dented the US food system & made it harder to fight the war.
Some white Americans did publicly oppose rounding up their Japanese neighbors. They were in the minority & overruled.
Resistance was limited to individual efforts to tone down the impact of incarceration- tending jailed neighbors' farms while they were away, sending supplies to the camps, etc.
Public outrage over the many US citizens deported caused Operation Wetback to get its funding pulled. … After 3 months & over 1 million people deported.
This was the fastest a purge ever got rolled back. But it still took people a while to notice & stop it. At the supposed peak of US unity.
Slavery & Jim Crow: millions of Americans held in captive labor.
Enslaved & sharecropping farm workers knew things were bad! They did what they could to push back the whole time.
But that wasn't enough. Both slavery & Jim Crow finally ended when a critical mass of white Americans decided they should. Not even the majority of white Americans. Just a critical mass. And it took us ~250 and close to 100 years to get there, respectively.

The US & its preceding colonies were at war with tribes ~each year from 1610 - 1920s- 300 years.
There was more opposition from white folks than you'd think; but it wasn't broad-based, organized, or effective. We're still breaking treaties with tribes today.
We still have a long way to go. And it's frustrating bc we have leaders who supposedly want to run our country better, and they plain don't have the levers to do much. I'm not making excuses.
I'm just pointing out how weird it is for the US to even *have* leaders who want to do better.

For what it's worth I totally understand the, it's worse than it's ever been, I don't recognize this country, sentiment. I think for a lot of us (some millennials, gen Z & beyond) it's "worse than it's been in my lifetime", and it's not just the horrendously racist and cruel acts of 🧊 and their ilk, I think it's colored by the rest of the environment. The rollback of rights that seemed solidified, whether from before some of our lifetimes or for much of it (or especially our adult lives), everything that feels like a reversal of progress, even the 🏒-graph greedflation, all at once. I empathize with how hard it is not to see doom when you can't afford your rent or even a 🍔 (at home or fast food), your healthcare is getting taken away, your neighbors are getting kidnapped, and you or your 🏳️⚧️ loved ones are being actively targeted.
I appreciate what you're saying here, and am grateful, but I'm having to intentionally stop thinking about how this could be interpreted as "the bastards got away with it every previous time"

There's another factor at play here, also. Not only are we seeing a backlash in realtime but, possibly even more important, we're seeing into the perspectives of the target populations, also in realtime, in a way that hasn't been possible or available before.
The humanity of the marginalized groups is much more visible than previously. & that humanity is MUCH harder to gloss over with propaganda than it used to be.
I moved to the USA in 1989 from Australia. Got ciiizenship, moved my family there, etc. In March 2025, we left and moved to Mexico. I'm watching things implode from outside the blast range, but spent last week back in the USA. It was like being in the eye of a hurricane. No one seems to realize what is going on, and yet the homeless on the streets, drugs, despair, boarded up buildings. How could people not see the bleeding obvious?

I don't have the stomach to do the necessary homework, but I suspect it might be a worthwhile, as a first approximation, to go through Project 2025, invert the signs, & list out the objectives & strategies—a detailed plan—of what it would take to systematically build a society anchored firmly in the Liberal Consensus. I think I hear you, this scale of response this quickly being new. That, makes sense and suggests how key it is to get more coverage of that resistance and especially its successes out there, so that it can keep growing quickly.

I see "late stage capitalism" as a very positive thing. It means capitalism has mostly run its course and will soon cave in under the weight of its own excesses. That will be painful, but if we can survive to get to a post-capitalist society, it will be better.

Liberals have been more than happy to lock black and brown people up en masse as long as they can run them through the system first. If someone is convicted of a crime, they're completely okay with throwing them in prison. Does "convicted" mean "guilty?" Should what they were convicted of even be a crime? That's a cop out; that's throwing your hands up; that's giving yourself an excuse to give up and not try. It's showing a lack of imagination, if you truly cant think of worse things. There were times during the Cold War people lived in constant fear of nuclear annihilation. It's also showing a lack of historical knowledge, especially knowing that the underlying issues of what is happening (racism, sexism) are foundational particularly to Western culture, and human culture in general. To think that these issues were just going to go away quietly is naive, or that somehow with education we had suddenly become not-racist. Er is wel kritiek in de meeste media te lezen, maar dat gaat slechts in op veiligheid van het autoverkeer. Mensenrechten en de wet doen er kennelijk niet meer toe. Niemand die zich afvraagt wat deze knokploeg had gedaan als ze daadwerkelijk een asielzoeker (of iemand die ze daar voor aanzagen) had gevonden...
NUnl doet alsof het knokploegje een burgerarrest wil maken. Maar dat is helemaal niet van toepassing. Asielzoekers die naar Ter Apel gaan houden zich juist perfect aan de wet. Wat NUnl doet is niets anders dan mensen opruien tegen asielzoekers, en aanzetten tot geweld.
Je kunt op je vingers uittellen wat deze reactie teweegbrengt: de burgerwacht viert feest vanwege het grote succes en het gebrek aan optreden door de politie. Ze zal de volgende dag iets rustiger aan doen om de politie niet alsnog tot optreden te dwingen, maar binnen korte tijd weer voluit doorgaan, en de raad van NUnl ter harte nemen.
Deze fasho knokploeg waant zich straffeloos, gerechtvaardigd en machtig. Het is een kwestie van tijd voordat er gewonden vallen. Mensen van kleur hebben wederom te horen gekregen dat de politie hen niet beschermt, en lopen gewoon feitelijk gevaar als ze in de buurt van Ter Apel rijden.
Oh... ik schreef "fasho" knokploeg. Is dat een te groot woord? Waarschijnlijk niet. Volgens Trouw is de aanvoerder al meerdere keren veroordeeld wegens opruiing, een bekende van pro-Zwarte Piet acties en coronaprotesten. Ook werd hij veroordeeld nadat hij als aanvoerder van boerenprotesten de snelweg blokkeerde, waardoor een vrachtwagen achterop een auto van een gezin klapte. Dat heeft hem geenszins tegengehouden.

WAT MOETEN WE HIER MEE?
Ik denk dat het heel erg belangrijk is om met name de media te stoppen, in deze steeds verdergaande ontmenselijking van vluchtelingen, migranten en mensen van kleur.
Dit knokploegje moet uiteraard ook gestopt worden. Het waren er nu 12 en dat moet zeker niet groeien. Maar 12 nazi's op een donkere snelweg zijn niet het grootste gevaar. Als ze door blijven gaan zal de politie ze uiteindelijk wel moeten afstoppen, en anders doet iemand anders dat wel een keer.
Wat veel belangrijker is, is hoe politie en media nu op ze reageren.
We hebben gezien in Rwanda en in de rest van de geschiedenis wat er gebeurt als media geweld tegen minderheden normaliseren.
In Nederland staan we nu nog in het beginstadium daarvan. De afgelopen jaren is (nauwelijks bedekt) racisme al steeds verder genormaliseerd, maar regelrechte oproepen tot geweld zijn gelukkig (nog) taboe.
NUnl overschrijdt die grens in dit artikel. Niet enorm ver, ze staan niet te schreeuwen op een kansel dat we asielzoekers moeten aanvallen, maar ze geeft hier evengoed wel een niet mis te verstane tip aan een extreemrechtse knokploeg: "een bepaalde mate van dwang en geweld" tegen volkomen onschuldige asielzoekers "is toegestaan".
Ik denk dat het JUIST nu erg belangrijk is dat NUnl en andere media tot staan worden gebracht, en er aan herinnerd worden dat dit een no-go is. Dat deze tekst echt, echt niet kan. En dat het consequenties kan hebben als je als nieuwsmedium zulke dingen toch gewoon maar even denkt te kunnen roepen.
Ik denk dat dit een goed en belangrijk moment is om aangifte te doen tegen NUnl. Wegens opruiing.
Juist om te voorkomen dat een nieuwsmedium de volgende keer nog verder gaat. Want hoe verder we media deze grens over laten gaan, hoe moeilijker het wordt om ze terug te roepen. Als we wachten tot media openlijk oproepen om minderheden af te tuigen, zijn we te laat.

WAAROM HEBBEN WE JE HULP NODIG?
Ik zit met nare persoonlijke omstandigheden waar ik misschien later nog wel iets over schrijf, en heb zelf helaas geen spoons om hier iets mee te doen. Ik kan de kar niet trekken. Ik vind het zwaar kut maar dat kan echt niet.
Waar ik op hoop is dat JIJ hier iets mee wil doen. Dat één van jullie dit op wil pakken, en aangifte wil doen. Tegen NUnl, wegens opruiing.
Je loopt dan geen gevaar: je doet geen aangifte tegen nazi's die achter je aan zouden kunnen gaan zitten of iets dergelijks. Je doet aangifte tegen een nieuwsmedium wat hier een verkapte oproep tot geweld tegen "asielzoekers" doet.
Heeft dat effect? Ja. Ik heb niet zo'n enorm vertrouwen in onze rechtsstaat. Ik denk niet dat een aangifte tot een veroordeling gaat leiden (al zou dat wel hartstikke mooi zijn). Maar ik denk wel dat een aangifte tot effect heeft dat NUnl de volgende keer nog eens extra nadenkt voor ze weer zoiets schrijven. "Hmm, we willen niet nog eens een aangifte".
Dat kan enorm veel shit voorkomen.

Om verlies te voorkomen, heeft de advocaat van het regime net valselijk tegen het Supreme Court beweerd dat Musk nooit voor de Amerikaanse overheid heeft gewerkt. Totale nonsens natuurlijk, maar dit is cruciale informatie om te begrijpen waarom Musk nu officieel vaarwel zegt. Is de bron van de NOS voor het volgen van Amerikaans nieuws misschien NUnl, en omgekeerd?
Musk doet nu dus alsof hij niets meer met de Amerikaanse overheid te maken heeft.
Dat is uiteraard onzin, hij heeft nog steeds alle overheidsdata in handen die hij heeft geroofd, en om maar eens iets te noemen is hij eigenlijk de enige kanshebber op een IT overheidscontract van 25 miljard. En toen hij met Trump Saoedi Arabië bezocht heeft hij daar ook al tientallen miljarden in de wacht heeft gesleept terwijl hij de afhankelijkheid van de VS van hem vergrootte.
Het belangrijkste wat verandert is dat hij niet meer het publieke gezicht van Amerikaans overheidsfascisme zal zijn. Pardon, van de "vrijwillige vertrekregeling voor ambtenaren", nietwaar RTL?

Thanks Sarah. It's important perspective, both on the brutal history of this flawed nation and how things are tangibly different today than in the past.
For what it's worth I totally understand the, it's worse than it's ever been, I don't recognize this country, sentiment. I think for a lot of us (some millennials, gen Z & beyond) it's "worse than it's been in my lifetime", and it's not just the horrendously racist and cruel acts of 🧊 and their ilk, I think it's colored by the rest of the environment. The rollback of rights that seemed solidified, whether from before some of our lifetimes or for much of it (or especially our adult lives), everything that feels like a reversal of progress, even the 🏒-graph greedflation, all at once. I empathize with how hard it is not to see doom when you can't afford your rent or even a 🍔 (at home or fast food), your healthcare is getting taken away, your neighbors are getting kidnapped, and you or your 🏳️⚧️ loved ones are being actively targeted.

We think of ourselves as special, so anything we personally experience is the superlative, because it's happening in our present.
This is what they mean about people who don't study history.
We are not setting the benchmarks on anything except as relates to the climate crisis. Which isn't new, either, but which is demonstrably worsening.

Yeah, like you said, I'm just glad people are speaking up about this in a big way because this has been happening for decades. I think one of the key differences is that they've dropped the pretense that what they're doing is "justice."
Liberals have been more than happy to lock black and brown people up en masse as long as they can run them through the system first. If someone is convicted of a crime, they're completely okay with throwing them in prison. Does "convicted" mean "guilty?" Should what they were convicted of even be a crime? We've never really had a meaningful conversation about that in this country.
But the numbers really speak for themselves. Things *were not okay* before Trump was elected. When this fascist regime falls apart, we *cannot* go back to how things were before.

I couldn't agree more about the whole 'this being the worst timeline' being really problematic. That's a cop out; that's throwing your hands up; that's giving yourself an excuse to give up and not try. It's showing a lack of imagination, if you truly cant think of worse things. There were times during the Cold War people lived in constant fear of nuclear annihilation. It's also showing a lack of historical knowledge, especially knowing that the underlying issues of what is happening (racism, sexism) are foundational particularly to Western culture, and human culture in general. We've never actually had a reckoning with our past (or present). To think that these issues were just going to go away quietly is naive, or that somehow with education we had suddenly become not-racist. It's also not surprising that we are having a hard time forming a coherent resistance party given how much technology has changed politics in the last 20 years, and given the diversity and complexity of g

Let's give this issue, the rise of violent ultra-nationalism in the 21st century, its due as the complex historical problem that it is and not get frustrated when we can't solve it or defeat it in six months. But like you say, there are signs that American society as a whole, not just those directly persecuted, are resisting in ways that are novel. We are far from powerless here and I'm really tired of takes that paint us as such.
