What about the flood of sob stories wanting donations a while back, those seem to have dried up?
Some specialized instances do verify people when they first sign up. But they won't send DMs like this to established accounts.
Serious question: What will they achieve from this even if one did go through with it? Ain't no-one sharing gobmint ID with strangers, very few people (used to) use gobmint names online (with good reasons!), so what will they get?
They are trying to con people into giving their credit card details as a form of verification. Then they can drain the card of money.
The reason they're doing this is because so many sites are actually asking for this, for example Apple is now demanding all its UK users give credit card details to verify their age. This gives scammers a really good cover to do scams.
Fediverse platforms don't do this, but not everyone realises this.

When you read about Bans of Social Media for Teens and Age Verification, you must remember what it truly means:
• Official identification of every adult using social media.
• Deanonymization of every account, endangering groups that often rely on pseudonymity for safety, such as victims of domestic violence, victims of stalkers, people of color, and LGBTQ+ people.
• Putting every adult at great danger of exploitation, fraud, and identity theft by forcing them to share their official ID with a for-profit third-party company with no incentive to protect it. Breaches have already happened.
• Constructing a system of mass surveillance to attach every comment on social media to a legal identity. Effectively allowing authoritarian governments to silence their critics and opposition.
• Potential for dystopian censorship and cutting off means of organization for groups of resistance to oppressive regime and organizations.
• Endangering children online by putting a clear identification beacon over every child or family with children online.
• Endangering the data of children who will inevitably try to pass as adults, and have their information collected by the third-party for-profit company.
• Diminishing the value of official identification due to the inevitable data breaches, eventually pushing the system to require even more intrusive identification techniques, such as iris scans and fingerprints.
• Installing a system of mass surveillance capable of attaching even more information to everyone's legal identity. With a potential to built list of people in certain groups, and scale-up state censorship and discrimination in unprecedented ways.
• The list goes on and on.
This isn't about protecting the children.
It never was.
Do not be duped by this excuse used to convince you to let go of your human rights. They are only trying to manipulate people lacking information.
Stay informed on the issues related to Age Verification, and push back for your rights to privacy and democracy.
The future depends on us.

if they cared about the well-being of children and developmental problems with being exposed to the the internet they'd be talking about different thing.
You'd want to make the internet less addictive and dangerous, by limiting ad-tracking and algorithmic systems the incentivize mass data harvesting. Force public-facing spaces to effectively moderate to keep from being dangerous to children.
You'd want to make the material environment more hospitable to doing anything other than sitting inside on a computer all day. Limiting cars so it's safe to be outside, promoting public parks, social programs and child-friendly public events.

Observing humans under capitalism and saying it is in their nature to be greedy, is like observing humans underwater and saying it's in our nature to drown.
Humans can be shockingly malleable, in terms of what we can be conditioned to accept as normal. Huge amounts of social engineering went into giving us the desperate impulse to grab for whatever we can reach. That's a compulsive behavior, very much like the food hoarding of a person who's experienced starvation. Or the junk-hoarding behavior of people who've had everything taken away from them multiple times-- sweeping the homeless compounds their trauma and makes them that much more likely to cling to anything and everything they can.
Artificial scarcity is DESIGNED to make us act like this. Torture programs research learned helplessness and addiction and more, for this purpose. Blame the victims, convince everybody this is just a dog eat dog world where everybody is a selfish bastard deep down and.. actually, what IS the point of that line of reasoning??

And the other thing with Steam is that a lot of the people who make games for Steam would not settle for a non-paid option.
because the content and the consumer aren't distinguishable for social networking. For the promises of federated systems to really work, exit costs need to be kept as low as possible. Most people do not, and should not be expected to, have loyalty to their particular instance strong enough to make most instances financially sustainable.

Long term the project of 99finches is to convince local businesses in Iowa to advertise here instead of on platforms that have been proven in open court to have screwed over their business clients on ad purchases. Then use that revenue to pay people in Iowa to do the long-term work needed to make the Fediverse a serious threat to big tech.

It's pretty straight Mastodon but all authenticated traffic it through #Tor and no email addresses are collected.
So there's nothing beyond the public posts to identify users. What you put in a public post can be much more identifying that you may think but at least with this model full control is with the user the service doesn't need to know anything extra

The US simply doesn't have the manpower to pull off a successful invasion, which wouldn't reopen the Strait anyway, and businesses would prefer to pay the Iranians to let their ships through rather than have them blocked for the next 3 months or more.

As I pointed out, rape in many jurisdictions only included penis-vagiina, so it wasn't possible to charge anyone with rape if the perp and victim were both male. Has zero to do with consent. The law was too restrictive and left too many unprotected. Using the term sexual assault fixed that. Think of it - a man could not be charged with raping his son, because no vagina. Sexual assault has that covered. There's a reason people pushed for the term sexual assault - it left less wiggle room for perps to try to wiggle out, same as scum bag Clinton argued he never had sex with his intern because state law didn't consider a blow job as sex - only a penis penetrating a vagina. First things first: THANK YOU for your service!
What you describe is how it always is in war. We are at war against a fascist, racist theocracy. Either we win this war or much of the world descends into a slave pit of misery.
And we are winning it! Crimethinc's analysis shows deportation flights from Minneapolis plunged after that Jan 14 neighborhood uprising.
Now Trump is in a war with Iran that he sought just after it became clear he had no path to victory in Minneapolis. He's losing there too.
Notice there have been no futher large scale, widely reported urban invasions intended to sow fear.
The deportation machine grinds on, one of the main threats now seems to be 287 (g) in shithole states like Florida which are much harder to fight. This however isn't flashy stuff that energizes the GOP base.
As I said elsewhere, a defeat for Trump in Minneapolis followed by a defeat for him in Iran could trigger a blowout defeat for the GOP in November even over ICE agents at polls etc. If THAT happens, Trump loses much of his influence, cannot rule by decree, cannot push bills through an opposing Congress-and loses his path to an illegal 3ed term or otherwise staying in office past Jan 20 2029. Sweeping him out will leave the Dems owing huge debts to our street fighters and a torrent of public rage will be unleashed against the GOP. Hopefully we can then throw down everything Trump stands for and smash it to bits, burn it to ashes.
If Trump goes for an auto-coup after defeats in Minneapolis and Iran, expect it to blow up in his face. In that scenario, we may be able to get him out immediately. Every Federal official will have to choose between obeying Trump and obeying the courts, and they will mostly be trying to cover their own asses.
Worst comes to worst we fight an open-ended guerilla war, and Trump's successors are never able to pacify the continent. Eventually their regime burns out, exhausted from the war.

Thanks for this. I'm not in the US but I think we may need this perspective in Australia pretty soon. The problems won't be exactly the same here, but the answers will be.
Fascism has engulfed the US decades ago but US Americans have always been rewarded and bribed just enough to be completely ignorant of their own political reality. It is so shocking as someone who my mom is from Iraq and dad is from Iran see Americans grapple with "coming" or "developing" fascism after watching my family get wiped off the face of the earth by Americans. The only way you can think that America is not a fascist empire is if you don't think people in other countries are human. The US empire has killed over a million Iraqis. Millions of Vietnamese, hundreds of thousands of Afghans, installed fascist dictatorships in Indonesia, Chile, and in dozens of other countries around the world. To think that it is "developing" fascism is just ignorance of who you are.

That was one of the first books of poetry I ever bought for myself as a new young adult and poetry student, many moons ago. Very powerful. Eye opening for my privileged, protected young self. Big impact on my political development.

Laws have been used to protect those in power and the rich as they oppressed the poor. When a commoner breaks the law, he's instantly charged and punished by the authorities but when when the one in power breaks the law, it's justified to make it look that he was right to do it. But a solution without laws still turns into chaos so no one should be above the law and that's how we can preserve justice.

the USA leads the world in per capita incarceration. That's because it is, and has always been, an authoritarian police state for black people. What's happening in the USA now is happening because of escalating Supreme Court GOP voter suppression against black people. The Supreme Court's 2000 Bush v Gore ruling is an example, but things have escalated & accelerated with the 2013 beginning of the rollback of MLK's iconic Voting Rights Act of 1965.
