Does anyone know of a social dance that's operated on a co-op or similar model?

I'm trying to start a contra dance near Smyrna, GA and, being me, I want to give people a sense of ownership so they'll be more likely to pitch in and come back week after week. The best way I know to do that is to make it a co-op, but I don't want to limit who can be an owner based on their ability to financially contribute. I'm hoping some existing dance has a good model already that I might be able to apply or learn from.

So one thing this post discusses is governance of servers. When I joined Mastodon, a server which is cooperatively/democratically governed seemed like the natural and obvious choice, so I found one and joined it. I still think that and hope people create more cooperatively governed servers. But the structure of the activitypub protocol does place natural limitations on how much governance of servers can shape the fediverse. It doesn't use the exact words but a major theme is that everything is about power and it's essential to look at where structures place power.

We will be honest and say that for a small to medium organisation, their are more up front costs to a more open infrastructure.

There's more upfront costs e.g. discovery, communications, quotes, setup. We're a small co-op so we don't have the same amount invested in automation as big tech.

However these costs balance out over the long term as you don't get locked into the tiers and paywalling of big providers where as soon as you hit a certain scale they tighten the screws and start trying to get real money out of you.

That's how big tech work, they set themselves up using loads of capital, hook in the small fishes for free or cheap to get market dominance then once folks are locked into their workflows, they go for the big clients.

Stop playing their game! There is a different way.
