I've been pouring quite a bit of time and energy into running my own #Decentralized instance, and this is only the beginning! My current #Pleroma instance is essentially a test environment, I'm planning to migrate to other platforms down the road.

But the real challenge lies elsewhere. If you read my previous post, you know I've been struggling to get my friends and family on board. I can still convince my parents and grandmother to try #Matrix, but pulling my friends over is a whole different story. They seem open to the idea of an #ActivityPub + Matrix combo, yet they're dragging their feet. The most active person on my instance (aside from me) hasn't even bothered to set a profile picture.

So I wanted to ask everyone who's active in the #Fediverse — how did you bring your friends here? What got them interested? 🤔

i wish #blacksky the best of luck, i got nothing but good vibes from them and for them, but the problem is the tech is "decentralized," ie, not truly #decentralized

and of course as the main show #bluesky trends #techbro #fascist it will turbocharge blocks and limitations and drag them into what? into isolation

there is always #matrix but from my experience it is way heavier than xmpp. OMEMO, the XMPP E2E thing, is/was based on the Signal (Axolotl) crypto protocol and probably doesn't work way worse than what Matrix gives you in that regard.

Maybe do a research on any audit findings or analysis's of the ecosystem and its parts too.

Both have ample selection on servers and clients these days.

Give both a try.

Again so many nice talks about #decentralized networks and #open #protocols together with @berlinfediday & @matrix

After I was arrested, I decided to change the way we promote and introduce DeltaChat. Until then, we had always presented DeltaChat merely as a communication channel for when the internet goes down in Iran, and people used it exactly for that reason.

But now that DeltaChat has drawn so much attention in Iran, and even someone like me has been arrested for promoting it, I think it's much wiser to shift our content strategy. Instead of portraying DeltaChat only as a way out during internet blackouts, it's better to introduce it as a practical, everyday tool.

Honestly, getting back into this kind of work is very difficult for me. But still, I genuinely believe it can be very helpful and I feel I have to do it.
My goal is for ordinary people in Iran to use DeltaChat for its actual features and built-in tools, not just as an emergency app. Ultimately, I want DeltaChat to become a mainstream, everyday messenger here in our own Iran at least here and maybe, just maybe, even help people in other places too. But well, that's exactly the big challenge.

Why is it different here? The answer is obvious, but bears repeating. The Fedi is truly a #decentralized network.

If the owners of your instance suspend your account, you actually do have the option to set up shop on another instance and continue to interact on the network. You are not banned from the network. No one has that power.

And, importantly here it is the owners who must be careful not to alienate users with capricious rules. The dynamic is reversed. Here the users have the power.

I am a fan of #fediverse and it’s apps. A lot of them are microblogging like Twitter/X. Some examples are mastodon and misskey. If you’re looking for something like Facebook then try Friendica. There are others. You can check it out at fediverse.party.

One app that I don’t see is Meetup. If I had the programming ability I would create one. The closest thing I can find is mobilizon.
