Raw numbers are perhaps not enough to get across just how bad the centralisation of the Fediverse by mastodon.social is. I've done a chart to show this visually, hopefully this will make the situation clearer?

Given the circumstances, getting people to join *any* other server except mastodon.social would greatly help decentralise the Fediverse. It's no longer big vs medium vs small, it's more like supergiant deathstar mastodon.social vs everyone else 😞

I've used the #fediverse since 2017, had accounts on many different instances. A month ago i created my current account on #MastodonSocial because i was transferring over 1K music posts from #Bluesky where i had done a music discovery project earlier in 2025 but wanted to leave there and not lose all that work.

I chose Mastodon.social because it was a TON of work and i needed to know i was choosing an instance that could handle that many posts and wasn't going away.

I moved over 1K music posts off #Bluesky and recreated a Linktree to be able to sort them all when desired. It was a project for myself to have discogs links for #Vinyl purchases, and for my partner to be able to hear new things from afar when not together.

I moved to #MastodonSocial because it was a ton of work and i'd like to ensure my #Fediverse instance doesn't shut down which would lose it all.

Sometimes picking a big one is actually a good idea.

Thank you for that information! I'm on mastodon.social, but I'm usually on a third-party app, #Fedilab, which doesn't show badges, so domain verification is still important.
On that, why not verify through mastodon.social and mastodon.online instead of joinmastodon.org?

In reading an important discussion of the IP assignment in the new Mastodon.social ToS:

I was GOBSMACKED to discover the new ToS has a "binding arbitration waiver," which takes away your right to sue, no matter how badly the service abuses you.

These are profoundly unethical, terrible clauses. They should never, ever appear in "adhesion contracts" (that is, contracts that you merely click through, rather than negotiating.)

I saw #mastodonSocial just updated their terms of service to prohibit scraping data for training #LLMs which sucks. Maybe I'll move instances again.

But I wonder; how does this work across the #Fediverse? Like, surely an instance that federates with m.s doesn't have to abide by this rule, and could allow the same #ActivityPub content to be scrapped from their servers instead.

Which just makes this kind of performative.
