"Wall time" in Ventura County is now over 1 hour. That's the amount of time ambulances are having to wait at the emergency room because beds are not open. #heatwave #CAwx #VenturaCounty

From Ryan Hall Y’all on FB: It's official.

June, July and August of 2026 were the hottest summer in American history.

Hotter than the Dust Bowl summer of 1936. Hotter than anything in 132 years of records.

Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico just had the hottest summer their states have ever measured. Texas, Florida and California, top 4.

1936 had eight states at #1. It also had six states cooler than normal. This summer had four at #1 and not one cool state.

That is how you beat the Dust Bowl. Find your state on the map.

Tens of thousands of people have died in extreme heat in recent weeks.

The true toll is likely far higher.

Make no mistake: this is fossil-fuelled chaos.

It's 86F already (!! 6:35am) over in Agoura. It's supposed to get to 94F (!!) in Santa Barbara... by the ocean. Where it's not supposed to get that hot.

(Except that one time in historical record, which was quite the exception, and not extremely reliable, and questionable, for sure).

Wow, air temps already rising, it's only 6:20am in the morning.

(76.7F outside before the sun is up).

It's going to be H.O.T. today.

🥵

101.6F, 33% humidity, heat index is 106.9F.

(I am indoors, air conditioning is on, so I am fine... but.... yeesh).

(and yes, yes, some future September 9th, the universe willing, I will look at this fondly "look! it was only 106.9F heat index, instead of 134F! Do you remember when we didn't have to jump in the refrigerated survival pods during heatwaves?")

(athlete at Arizona State University is in a coma after suffering heatstroke due to an intense workout in heat).

ESPN: ASU's Matthew Mayich had heat stroke, lack of oxygen to brain, lawyer says

9/2/26

The Arizona State hockey player and St. Louis Blues draft pick who collapsed in an offseason workout suffered exertional heat stroke that reduced the flow of oxygen to his brain, his attorney told ESPN on Wednesday.

"This injury is from exertional heat stroke that caused a lack of oxygen to the brain," attorney Rob Carey said. "There were no other contributing conditions, only exertion-related heat. This is not an induced coma. We need a miracle."

That heat wave in Europe was a contributing factor in the death of my friend.

He was about 80. People may say shit about how these extreme weather conditions are merely taking out people who were already old and had other health conditions-- vulnerabilities, dammit, but the smug jerks never call anyone such a sympathetic word as "vulnerable" when they're writing folks off as expected and expendable losses, that might suggest the elderly or sick or disabled etc need protection-- and yeah he had a very long and full life, but you know what?

It would've been really nice if his wife could have had a couple more years with him after their honeymoon, instead of a WEEK.

Wake up, put on shorts and t-shirt, open the door and dive out into the 73F humid river that is the Va outside air, starting my morning swim/walk through town.

Shirt damp, coated in a film of sweat that can’t evaporate, I continue my walk in what feels like a steamy robe.

A couple of despondent teens shamble by heading to their school bus stop. Both wear jeans or sweat pants and LONG SLEEVE ZIPPED UP HOODIES.

I think I had sympathetic heatstroke on the spot. WTF, kids? How!?

I know when as a #Guardian reader I’m being wound up like a cheap watch…but is this really the kind of climate denial scientifically illiterate rubbish that #Ofcom still allows to be broadcast?

NPR: NPR spent 2 years tracking deaths from heat. We found a staggering hidden toll

"...Thousands of Americans die every year from a chronically underreported cause: heat.

As summer heat intensifies because of human-driven climate change, the United States' official tally of heat-related deaths does not come close to capturing the full human toll. The data feeding into nationwide death counts is collected inconsistently and rarely thoroughly.

The result is a vast undercount of the number of people who die because of heat...."

These forces drove the deadly #GrandCanyon #FlashFlood

The #Arizona #monsoon is only one part of a bigger #weather story.

This weekend’s #FlashFlooding, which has killed at least one person in the Grand Canyon, wasn’t an isolated weather event.

The torrential rain was part of Arizona’s monsoon season, which runs from June 15 through Sept 30.

But the monsoon alone doesn’t tell the whole story.
