It's 86F already (!! 6:35am) over in Agoura. It's supposed to get to 94F (!!) in Santa Barbara... by the ocean. Where it's not supposed to get that hot.
(Except that one time in historical record, which was quite the exception, and not extremely reliable, and questionable, for sure).
(I am indoors, air conditioning is on, so I am fine... but.... yeesh).

The Arizona State hockey player and St. Louis Blues draft pick who collapsed in an offseason workout suffered exertional heat stroke that reduced the flow of oxygen to his brain, his attorney told ESPN on Wednesday.
"This injury is from exertional heat stroke that caused a lack of oxygen to the brain," attorney Rob Carey said. "There were no other contributing conditions, only exertion-related heat. This is not an induced coma. We need a miracle."
Matthew Mayich, the Arizona State hockey player and Blues draft pick who collapsed in an offseason workout, suffered exertional heat stroke that reduced the flow of oxygen to his brain, his attorney told ESPN.
That heat wave in Europe was a contributing factor in the death of my friend.
He was about 80. People may say shit about how these extreme weather conditions are merely taking out people who were already old and had other health conditions-- vulnerabilities, dammit, but the smug jerks never call anyone such a sympathetic word as "vulnerable" when they're writing folks off as expected and expendable losses, that might suggest the elderly or sick or disabled etc need protection-- and yeah he had a very long and full life, but you know what?
It would've been really nice if his wife could have had a couple more years with him after their honeymoon, instead of a WEEK.

Sometimes I find shop windows to be little works of art (especially when I photograph them). I live in a rather artistic town #Ghent, and in the past there were lots of window display artists who created shop windows just for fun (nothing for sale).
But this photo is of a real shop window; for a moment I thought it was worth a pic on film.
This summer we were back in Italy and also spent about a week in Bologna. It’s almost become an annual tradition. And when I travel, I always take far too many cameras with me. Back to seriousness, no more suggestive double exposures !
I know it’s not #fensterfreitag today, but who cares, the tag will work just the same ! (Sorry for the lack of seriousness just now.) I forgot on Friday !! Sometimes I find shop windows to be little works of art (especially when I photograph them). I live in a rather artistic town #Ghent, and in the past there were lots of window display artists who created shop windows just for fun (nothing for sale).
But this photo is of a real shop window; for a moment I thought it was worth a pic on film.
This summer we were back in Italy and also spent about a week in Bologna. It’s almost become an annual tradition. And when I travel, I always take far too many cameras with me. Especially now, at a time when I sometimes question the point of my analogue photography... What for, and for whom ? But on arriving in Bologna, I did end up rediscovering one of my oldest camera companions, my Canon A1, loaded with a roll of Kodak 400 Ultramax Mainly to see if I could find a bit of joy in taking photos just for the fun of it.
Something I did notice whilst wearing my A1 round my neck on walks around town... The camera is really heavy to have round your neck all the time! And I haven’t mentioned it yet, but Bologna was absolutely sweltering in early August!
Wake up, put on shorts and t-shirt, open the door and dive out into the 73F humid river that is the Va outside air, starting my morning swim/walk through town.
Shirt damp, coated in a film of sweat that can’t evaporate, I continue my walk in what feels like a steamy robe.
A couple of despondent teens shamble by heading to their school bus stop. Both wear jeans or sweat pants and LONG SLEEVE ZIPPED UP HOODIES.
I think I had sympathetic heatstroke on the spot. WTF, kids? How!? #heatwave

The idea was to change my habits every week and to see how effective my two panels could be at offsetting my house’s power draw from the grid.
The gist of it is that by merely having my equipment and a small garden, I could avoid drawing almost a third; and by optimizing panels placement, erase two thirds of my weekly electricity usage.
I’ll be adding my notes further down.
The solar equipment that I have is
2x 400 W panels
1x micro inverter with two 400 W solar inputs, also one battery connection and one grid connection, each of which can sustain 600 W in both directions at the same time, and maximum 800 W combined to the grid
1x battery with 1 kWh capacity, 1200 W charging rate from the grid and 1800 W output rate (or 2400 W in short bursts)
supports for the panels so that they can be placed on the ground,

Plug-in solar in an urban setting
Having a really hot summer in France and very few clouds for weeks, I thought I’d do a little experiment with my beginner’s plug-in solar equipment.
The idea was to change my habits every week and to see how effective my two panels could be at offsetting my house’s power draw from the grid.
The gist of it is that by merely having my equipment and a small garden, I could avoid drawing almost a third; and by optimizing panels placement, erase two thirds of my weekly electricity usage.
I’ll be adding my notes further down.
The solar equipment that I have is
2x 400 W panels
1x micro inverter with two 400 W solar inputs, also one battery connection and one grid connection, each of which can sustain 600 W in both directions at the same time, and maximum 800 W combined to the grid
1x battery with 1 kWh capacity, 1200 W charging rate from the grid and 1800 W output rate (or 2400 W in short bursts)
supports for the panels so that they can be placed on the ground, oriented and tilted towards the sun
The house also has a water/air heat pump (but no air conditioning) that cycles every now and then to keep the water at temperature. It is responsible for perhaps half of the remaining power draw at the best of times (August 11).
Appliances in the house: ventilation system, fridge, freezer. The house draws 110-280 W depending what appliances wake up.
As far as using the kitchen this August: I usually took eggs and coffee in the morning, a pot or two of tea during the day, then cooking that required sustained boiling water in the evening. Lunch didn’t require using the kitchen.
Disclaimer: I’m not an electrician, but I have an understanding of the concepts involved and my place is up to code.
# Some statistics about why this experiment
In France, our grid is mostly (two thirds) nuclear powered with a lot of hydro (10%) to fill the gaps, and then the usual suspects with wind (9%) and solar (6%), according to ElectricityMaps [1].
I know when as a #Guardian reader I’m being wound up like a cheap watch…but is this really the kind of climate denial scientifically illiterate rubbish that #Ofcom still allows to be broadcast?
